In the Märklin Digital system, commands about speed, direction and additional commands to turn on/off special functions are sent to the tracks by the Control Unit. On the track, the locos must be equipped with receivers to understand the transmissions from the CU. These receivers are called decoders. Some other digital manufacturers name their CU:s like "Commander" or "Chief" or similar, which is rather accurate to the principle of digital systems... You could actually see it as a "commander" shouting orders to his troops in a military fashion....  The "commander" (CU) shouts his order to the troops (digital devices as loco decoders) and addresses the order to one particular individual (decoder) in the group. The principle is that everybody listens to the command, but only the addressed individual (digital device) accepts the command and obeys it...
