Just so you know, I am a digital newbie (as if you couldn't tell from the question).

I bought this nice little switcher for my first layout in 25 years - the last one was straight Marklin AC - and it looks good and runs good. However, I have two difficulties that may be related to my inexperience:
  1. First, I can't read, let alone program, the decoder. When I address it either as a Motorola or a DCC decoder, the Z21 says it gets no response. Am I doing something rong, or are my expectations out of whack?
  2. Second, it seems to get stuck when I stop it, either when I throttle down to zero, or hit the stop button on my handheld device (iphone or android tablet). I have found that by slowly selecting different direction of travel (reverse-wait-forward-wait-reverse- etc.) a few times, it becomes responsive once again. Is there something about operating this little jewel that I need to learn?
All of this is new to me - digital, the Roco Z21, everything! On the plus side, my first conversion loco (ESU LokPilot v4.0 M4) works like a charm!

Hi, Bob,

I don't have this loco and I don't have any experience with the Z21. At least I have a similar loco.

Re 1: The loco supports the MM protocol only. With Motorola protocol it is impossible to read CVs from the loco.

Re 2: Did the loco have some run-in time? Maybe a problem with the brushes of the motor. Since it is a maintenance-free can motor there is probably nothing you can do without voiding the warranty.
Maybe you can try the loco with a different digital controller (club meeting, friends, friendly dealer, ...).
Regards
Tom
