Hello!

Looking this recent video from Jens (Link), I have an interesting question...

It's possible to create the same effect of the smoke under the wheels in H0 scale?
Someone have tips & ideas? Is there a product already on the market?

Comments? RollEyes

Cheers,

Walter

Roco made at least two H0 models that have this, including the BR 10 Black Swan. Three-rail versions also available, but RRP is high (around € 750 incl. VAT IIRC).

Yes I recall reading a report in Continental Modeller a few years back of the Roco with smoke coming out the cylinders - must be very impressive....strange that Marklin haven't produced something similar yet....???

Monster123 (Riekus) has one of those Roco Br10's and yes it is very impressive. The other feature the Roco has is that the funnel smoke puffs along with the sound.

Hi all.
There are usually only two reasons for steam from under the wheels.
One is a bad leak from the cylinder or valve seals or more normally the clearing of condensed water from the cyliders by the use of the "Cylinder drain cocks or valves".
This only happens for a short while when the loco starts and most efforts I have seen for H0 have the steam on all the while.
I have seen comments such as " It looks better when movong fast "
This should not happen unless you like leaky locos !

The only realistic H0 loco I have seen is this one so it is possible.

No connection with the manufacturer or supplier but when I have the money I will buy one .

Regards, Colin.

From the other end, you will never see a real steam engine move off without puffs from the drain cocks.

Why? Well, when an engine stands the cylinders will cool, so that any steam injected into them will at least partially condense into water. Water cannot be compressed, and is likely to blow the end off the cylinder (much like an IC engine sucking water into the intake). The drain cocks allow the water to be blown out, and are closed after the cylinders have had a chance to warm up.

I'm always a bit surprised to see people wanting smoke units for indoor layouts. My experience in G scale is that it forms a horrible oily mess over everything unless you have some breeze to take it away. Realistic, but not helpful for clean track!
You can never have too many Silberlinge

i have been using LGB smoke fluid for years and never have i noticed it to leave any noticeable residue on anything. i will admit though, after a long run the top and front of the lok will get soaked, it always evaporates completely. even on a flat black, non-factory paint job. i even think it looks realistic when returning a dirty, hard-run lok to the shops for servicing. when friends bring the kids to see the trains and there is a steamer without smoke they want to know why! i never run non-smoking loks when the kids are arround. i always let them fill the smoke units. if they miss a few drops i don't mind. LGB even recomends using it to clean the tracks. i have tried it and it works fine but i prefer isopropyl because its cheaper. mike
I love the smell of smoke fluid in the morning .

Hello folks!
Thanks for the coments... really appreciate it.

With those tips, I found on the net the specific model for 3-rail AC. Roco 68193. Several videos on Youtube.

Roco installed an extra motor to make the Dynamic Smoke... Really cool.

Cheers,

Walter

I picked up the Roco 68193 last summer from Modelbahnlippe-shoppe late last summer when Roco was closing it out. Picked it up for about $460 US after VAT was removed. I love the effect!!
