Rumours say there will be revised revised turnout motors available in April.

There are many threads about failing Märklin turnout motors and how they can be bridged for digital operation.
Regards
Tom

You haven't said what type of track you are using, but I am assuming it is C track as this seems to have the worst of the problems with turnout motors.

Seems to be a bit of a hit and miss affair with individual motors. I have some which work strongly in both directions and have never failed to operate in over ten years of use. Some others always work well in one direction and don't work so well in the other. None of my motors have ever failed completely. If it stops working I spray it with WD40 and leave it overnight to soak into the contact switches, then it works fine again for a few weeks.

There is a modification that can be made to bridge the connection for the micro switches so that the motors don't cut off at the end of travel. This solves the problem, but one must be careful not to leave the motor activated continuously as it will overheat and burn out the coil.

When you say "I keep having to replace my switch motors evry 2 hours of use" do you mean that every motor on your layout fails after using the layout for two hours? This is unlikely, but if true would indicate a problem unrelated to the motors themselves.

If you mean that individual motors fail after a cumulative operation time of two hours then that is a lot of operation for a turnout motor, assuming that a motor activates for about 1 second per operation it means the motor has been energised 7200 times.

Perhaps if you phrase your problem more precisely we can give better advice?

Hello,
I have had also issues like this in my layout. The older one 74490 and new one 74491 have the same problem. The only working way is to solder microswitch contacts to gether and hereby bypass the possibility to avoid burning the motor. If you do soldering you have to be sure that for example you don´t give too much time for turnout in your keyboard- and memory settings.
I have managed to burn my three-way turnout decoder with soldering contacts and giving too log time for turning. Threeway turnout mechanism might be sticky when it gets older.

By the way, have anyone any idea how to clean and make mechanism easy to swicth in three-way turnout. Putting oil into it is not a good idea.
Has anyone tried to use Viessmann Article number 4558 Point motor for Märklin (Turnout Mechanism). I´m just thinking to oder one and try it.

See you
Jukka

Hi Gentlemen,
Sorry for being so vague...it was frustration ! Yes I am using C track, and by 2 hours, I really meant , I usually play at least an hour a day and some switches have NEVER failed( abt 14) the other 20% tend to fail after a couple of months of play...Maybe 50 to a hundred commands. I don't think there is anything wrong with the set up, since some of them have worked flawlessly for 2 years.
I have been a Marklin addict ( with my 20 year sabbatical) since I was 9 years old (1959) and have always admired their quality durability and CHARM. I have never wandered to competing brands. It seems that this switch problem is endemic ..it was worse in prev model motors. All I have now is 91 and they seem to be marginally better ..but that's not good enough as far as I am concerned. This is supposed to be the Mercedes of German HO and I (think) should not have to rig this items to make them work. I am also mechanically inept...that why I buy premium and these switches are hardly that. I have had 2 in the last week that are going one way only and one failed completely, the other 14 have been working fine for a long time. I am really hoping that the rumor for a revised turn out motor is true.
It was great to get such a rapid response from fellow "marklinists"

Hello Mike.

Did you try to soldering one motor as described previously? For 'out-of-warranty' items it's a good solution to spare time&money.

Today, a new revised motor it's just a rumor...

Cheers,

Walter

As I mentioned before, for the ones that only work one way you can try a squirt of WD40 or similar. It seems to get them to work again, at least for a while.

Hopefully Marklin will come up with a more bulletproof motor soon.

'Has anyone read Tom's "signature"? .... a quote from the Marklin New Items brochure... :
"In all of the gauges, we particularly emphasize a high level of quality, the best possible fidelity to the prototype, and absolute precision. You will see that in all of our products." (from Märklin New Items Brochure 2015, page 1) ROFLBTCUTS!
Well I for one, and many, many others on this forum, do NOT see the quality and precision in this product, 74490/1!!
It is simply disgusting that a modern Marklin product can be SO appallingly unreliable in this day and age.
And M knows this only too well - witness the fact that they replace my faulty switches without even wanting the faulty ones in return!
And once, when I complained of one faulty switch, they sent me two in return.....
Tom, I pray the rumour is more than just a rumour......
From a thoroughly disillusioned and saddened Marklin fan of 55years.....
Joe
