I have purchased a Rivarossi HR2275 GR 743-366 FS locomotive and wish to convert from DC to AC to run on the Marklin track. This will be used for the pursuit train in my Von Ryan Express experiment. I also have a 740 on order for the prisoner train.

Also, this loco does not have a sound decoder so I will be installing either an ESU V4.0 or V4.0M4 LokSound. ESU has the DR55 sound file which should work ok as it does have the right whistle sound. With a little tweaking on the chuffs is should work fine.

Video of a 740 and a 743:

Do I need to remove the existing electronics and install just the ESU card?
Can I rotate two of the tender wheels 180 degree then wire them together to the rail input of the ESU?
What should I use for the pick-up shoe? Is there a Rivarossi AC shoe that will install onto one of the tender boggies and not look kitbashed?

Maybe someone in Italy can help with contact to Hornby Italy.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Alvin

Hi Alvin,
I doubt that Rivarossi offer a pick up shoe.

I imagine one of the shoes (as used in Marklin lighting kits) would work fine.
Do not limit your choices.
The one conversion I did (on a 2 rail car, for lights) happened to be a Fleischmann brand, it had the right sort of mounting I needed, and it works fine.

Kimball

HR2854/15 is the current part number for the shoe for my 13 year old Rivarossi BR96. Wether it will suit your loco is another matter.

Rivarossi "used" to make "most" loco in 3 rail as well but since they got sucked up by Hornby who knows. If the HR2275 GR 743-366 was ever made to accommodate a shoe you should be able to find a mounting point on the underside.
Sad when its cheaper to buy a new 29640 starter set from Germany than a CS2 on its own in Oz, welcome to the joys of Marklin down under .

Every Lima/Rivarossi model that I have has a similar slider to the standard Roco AC slider (short). You should be able to use the regular one or the Flusterschleifer as long as there is a suitable mounting point and screw to fix it to the locomotive or tender. One option you may wish to consider is to equip a Maerklin or Roco coach or car with a slider and always run that car behind the tender and connect the two together using some kind of current conducting coupling.

It looks like an MTC21 decoder will fit the socket. I would identify the two wires that feed the left and right rails to the main circuit board the decoder plugs into and then solder both to the solder pad for the left rail. This will common both rails together without having to do any modification to the wheel sets. Now the tough part. You will need to mount a slider and then feed it to the (now open) right rail solder pad. This would take the least amount of modification and it will get the slider feeding the correct point in the decoder, right rail in 2 rail is center rail in 3 rail. That is all it should take.

Mike's idea with a specific railcar is a good one. You can solder a wire to the copper finger of current conducting couplers. If the coupler pocket plastic, it will be insulated from the loko frame. Now you just need to bring that wire to the solder pad that was made available in my directions above.

You must post pictures. This was on of my dad's favorite movies and one that I too like very much. Dad always wanted to re-shoot the final scene so Ryan would make it to Switzerland.

DB lokos, coaches and freight cars from across Europe
But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs
ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control.
With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397.

Thanks for the comments.

As the loco is still in the mail, I can't see what I have to work with, but when it arrives, I will post some pictures and go from there.

I already have the rolling stock for the Von Ryan Express trains. I do need to kit bash the trailing coach car to add a platform and I think I will try to modify the interior to show the guys looking over a map while the German officer and his girl friend are tied up the room.
