There's not silly questions, the only silly question is that has not been formulated... BigGrin

Now to question... the best way to keep the pukos (centre studs) clean is to run the trains very often, every day if possible. But if the pukos get dirty use isopropylic alcohol or a cleaner for electrical devices, like Kontak 60. Never use abrasive metods.

I place "Noch 60157" on various wagons to keep the tracks clean. Works great.

About the centerstuds, you just have to run trains, and of course keep all greasing down to a minimum to prevent dirt accumulating. Also helps to keep the room for your model rail-road tidy.

Hi
As Leo has said, regular running of trains is usually all you need, and his Noch solution (a little hanger from one axle) is ideal.
You buy them in packets of 4, and I fit them to each of my Pwg gepackwagens.

However, if I do not run trains for 3 weeks, I find the centre pukos in a few spots, develop a mild insulation or oxidation, and trains will halt or hesitate.
This only occurs in a few places, and always the same places.
It may have something to do with quality of the metal in pukos.
Each doubtful section is only an inch or two, and in 40 metres of track, limited to about 6 places.

I use VERY fine sandpaper (at least 1200 grit) which you can get from a hobby store.
It is so fine it is like a polishing action, and does not hurt the pukos.
It cleans the spot up for running in no time.

regards
Kimball

Thanks for the added advice Kimball - I confess in my past I have used track cleaning blocks on the pukos to an extent that the paint had worn off (which is not good from a presentation perspective) but I wasn't aware of the potential damage.

I have also used a product obtained from my local hobby store but detailed in this link;

http://www.modeltrainstu...-Cleaner-p/clp-60031.htm

The version I have was built into a Marklin 4 axle chassis (probably an older caboose or something of that nature). A post of mine from some time ago has the pictures where I went overboard and created a track maintenance train which appeared to work well with two Marklin cleaning wagons 46042, one noch brush below my repair facility car 45072 in addition to the converted wagon mentioned above;

Maintenance Train

Forgive the poor image quality. The train was a little overboard but sounded great with two 86's loaded with sound (thank you Norm)!

I would run this a couple of times around the layout before I ran the good stuff LOL

If you are a DIY kind of a person, you could try this... All you need extra is a pickup shoe. Other members can comment on how effective this method could be.
Disclaimer: I have not tried it and this is a result of my old youtube search:)

Great idea Madhu - thanks for sharing. I wonder if we would be better to use isopropyl rather than oil?

Any thoughts from anyone?

Regards,

Michael.

hey madhu! - thankyou so much for that great little video - i thoroughly enjoyed watching it - especially in the beginning wondering what was going on with the paper! - its really great!

i might try this simple method - much better than paying 150euros for a Lux track cleaning car!.
