Hi all

Lazily sitting and looking at eBay uk I came across a UK based 3071 set for sale. No bids, so I punted the asking price and waited.

Tad ah - I've only gone and won it for £120.

Pictures when it arrives.

Now I have to find a 4071LOL

So maybe someone should push this guy ...

eBay auction item that I believe was from the W&W auction, as this guy seems to have a lot of items from there.

But this one appears to have a faulty decoder, although being slightly more expensive than Mikes one ...

Hi Alan

Thanks for the link. I did see that one but as it is digital, I avoided it. Apparently the seller of your link did buy a lot from the w&w auction.

Yes indeed. Once I have a 4071 as well, it will be on show on the layoutThumpUp

Looks like a 4071 will be about half the price of the 3071 setOhMyGod, judging by eBay.de

Hi Mike,

The high price of the 4071 might be due to the fact that most of them are warped, as the solvents inside the plastic have evaporated. So if you can get hold of a straight one, it's worth the money. BigGrin

Hi Mike,

Enjoy your 3071!

A word of warning about the 4071; when I bought my set it came with a 3071 and 4071 bundled together, which I thought was great as I then didn't need to look for a 4071 seperately. However, the red colour of the 4071 does not match the red colour of the 3071. It is slightly darker. I run it like that anyway but the difference is noticeable.

Later I found out that the colour of these trains changed to the deeper red after a year or so, and I guess the previous owner didn't buy them together. If you don't want to fall into the same trap as I did you'll need to make sure the red on the 4071 matches the red on your 3071 before getting it. This is not always easy from ebay photos!

Another thing to look out for is that the connecting mecahnism between the coaches can get bent or distorted, making it difficult to couple the train together. I had a hell of a job the first time I test ran my train, and it needed more than a little "fettling" before the connections lined up properly.

If you're going to convert it to digital I wish you the best of luck! A complete conversion keeping the slider changeover and the light switching will need an extra relay and more wiring between coaches to accomplish, but it's possible. I decided to keep things relatively simple and did away with the slider changeover, but the light switching works. I also didn't bother with interior lighting, as this would also have needed more wires between the coaches.

I look forward to seeing pictures and/or video of your unit running!

PS. Here is a photo of mine. The second coach is the 4071. You can see the different colour in this photo.

ESU have a relay PCB for exactly this purpose. I haven't ever tried using one, so don't know what wiring requirements it has.

I think Uhlenbrock also have a relay unit for the same purpose.

On Marklins web site click on service then enter 3071. There are two bulbs one red one clear 600015 and 600010 both available when doing a search on the web using Marklin 600015 and Marklin 600010. On Marklins web site the exploded seems to show you have to remove two screws holding the bogies (wheel sets with pickup shoe). Good luck-Fred

Hello again Mike,

I attach copy of the relevant pages from the instruction booklet that came with my 3071.

I also attach some "exploded diagram" details that I have gathered

As Thom says in post #22, dear Svein's site as I referenced in post #14 gives the details you require.

Have fun with your 3071 !!

Regards,

PJ

On the back end of the locomotive, there is a screw which you have to remove. Once this screw is out, you can lift the shell from the chassis and access the motor and the bulbs.

A few words of caution. Early editions of the 3071 were hounded with window panels that would fall out and had to be glued back in place.
If you decide to acquire a 4071, keep in mind as Ray stated, that models from the 1980s had a darker shade of red than models from the 1970s.
You should also make sure that the model is a 4071 with the two pronged connectors and not a 4070 with the three pronged connector in the wrong box.
This can often be detected if the coach has metal window frames. This detail was not painted on most if not all of the 3071/4071s.

Regards

Mike C

Hi Mike

We'll you answered my next questions, rolling on from Ray's post. That was when did the colour change and what is the difference from a 4070.
I shall now review my watched list in eBay.de to make sure I get the right one.

Maybe if I were to get a lighter red one by mistake, I could swop with RayLOL

Many thanks.

Hi all

Well the 3071 went into the maintenance shop this afternoon for a full strip down.

The info from you guys was spot on and the tops came off a treatBigGrin ThumpUp Thank you.Wink

A full set of tyres were fitted and the only bulb needed was the red lamp on the unmotorised car.

She received a full oil over and the bushes changed. Then for a veryshort test run on my very short test trackLOL
Perfect forward and reverse control. BigGrin All couplings working as they shouldLove

Looking at the box it shows 79 as the year, so I need to look for an earlier 4071.Blink I also found the instruction book underneath the guarantee and it shows 86?

So I will assume as the box is 79 the model will be as well.

Sorry no video yet Blushing

Hi all

Every day's a school day here on the forum. BigGrin

As I dig around for in to ensure I get the correct 4071, I also find that the earlier 3070 version came with inner lighting but the 3071 didn't, as shown below.

3070 1965-1970 Relais LFCM III RAm 502 SBB rot/beige, Innenbeleuchtung
3071 (1) 1971-1986 Relais LFCM III SBB rot/beige
3071 (2) 1987-1989 Relais LFCM III SBB dunkelrot/beige
3471 1995 Delta LFCM III DE 1001 NS dunkelrot/beige, Innenbeleuchtung
4070 1965-1970 III SBB rot/beige, Abteilwagen, Innenbeleuchtung
4071 (1) 1971-1986 III SBB rot/beige, Abteilwagen
4071 (2) 1987-1989 III SBB dunkelrot/beige, Abteilwagen

Is this why the 3070 had three connecting wires while the 3071 has only twoConfused

Can the 3071 be fitted with inner lighting and if so how easily? Does it mean changing the connections to three cable to incorporate the lighting?

So what I need to find is a 4071 (1). Rocking horse manure comes to mind as I trawl through the various ebays...All seem to be the later ones or the 4070 with three wire connectors.

Ahhhh well keep looking.Wink

Hello,
this is a classic model and nice to see so much interest.

I just converted last week a 3071 I bought recently. I used Lokpilot 4 chip and LFCM magnet for the job. The train has only one pick-up shoe in the front which made the wiring easy. The original 3-prong cable was used for marker an interior lights. All bulbs are original and grounded to frame.
Below is a short video of it's maiden voyage on ETE SoCal layout this weekend in Anaheim show.

Regards,
Juha

Not to detract from the thread, but just to say that it was a great camera for it's time, and capable of bettering a few cameras that came aafter it.

I know this is a bit late to the thread, but it was my understanding that it was the 3070 model and it's associated add on coach that bend like bananas, as opposed to the 3071, whose biggest problem is the windows popping in?

Careful how you handle it and try not to press on the windows.

Thanks Glenn,

Actually while I was putting mine on the track this week two more windows fell in, on different coaches of course!

I'll have to open it up and glue them back in some time.
