I recently recommended an American member to buy Marklin instead of Roco, prices being in the same catagory for the Austrian steamer in question.

Now that the end of 2014 is approaching rapidly,i still found some budget left to fill up one of my displaycases.
What is there to buy with say Euro 150 total?
Well, with the Marklin wishlist well filled for 2015,i decided to sail a different course and have set my aim at two Piko H0 DC loco's of a somewhat mature age, being 5/6333,the DDR version of the P8 steamer, and 5/6327,the DDR version of the 01 steamer with Boxpok wheels and DDR style elephant ears.
Both look rather fragile but offer interesting versions for well known models,i am sure they will look great on display.
Prices are remarkably low,if they run nicely that would be an added bonus.
It could well be that the endresult is a modest DC layout with East German stuff.
Happy New Year to all of you,and be careful out there!

Paul.

Well, the "wonderful" plastic valve gear assembly put me off Piko in the 90's... Wink
But the new Piko models are quite ok, though...

Beautiful looking models Paul,

Its a great suggestion for me looking for affordable material on a DDR line for '55 to '64.

Do they still have a plastic gear assembly?

Enjoy and belated Merry Christmas! Smile

When I first saw Piko models about 15 years ago at Gaugemasters I didn't like the look of them. They looked plasticky and cheap.

Today they look very good, but the classic range of steam locos are now almost as expensive as Marklin locos. The Expert and Hobby ranges are quite good value, though, and I have several of these, though only diesels and electrics.

Mark,

Plastic gear has gone, and Piko prices have gone up!
They are interesting models for static display,i guess.
There is plenty of DDR rolling stock too.
Would suggest ebay.de and look for Piko H0,there is plenty, even complete passenger trains with coaches.

Happy New Year!

Agreed.
Piko is not Marklin, that is for sure.
Nevertheless nice static models for a modest price, the 01 comes at less than Euro 70.-.

Meanwhile skipped the Piko P8 in favour of Marklin 3099 P8 DRG version from same seller.
Have a bid running on a Piko BR52 with condensation tender.

In my school years i bought Jouef and Lima, cheap trains with little detail and primitive motors.
I survived till my pay got better.

Thanks Paul,

Its a good suggestion. I have been looking at Piko for a while and I do have a few pieces of old rolling stock that runs quite well. No locos yet.
Ever since I become interested in East German prototypes from the late 50s and early 60s, I have wanted to pick up some more. Not sure if what I have now really could have run at that time. I need to do more research to find out. That might encourage me to get to the point where we would a decent small yard of DR stuff to begin modeling a layout for it.
