I recently bought the 8891 Tender loco and attached about 8-10 freight waggons to it. I noticed that the
loco clearly was affected by the weight that it had to pull and that it lost quite a lot of speed.
Now I wonder if the Märklin H0 version of the same loco (the 3091)would
have better power scalewise to pull the same amount of waggons.

I have a 3048 on a analog layout and ten cars are no problem but my old 3047 and can out pull anything, other members have had similar experiences because of the way it was geared.

I would say most Marklin HO locos can pull 8-10 freight wagons with no significant struggle.

A couple of factors might be in play here. Firstly, is that a 195mm curve? The sharper the curve the more drag on the wheel flanges of your wagons or coaches. Secondly, Z scale locos are light, relative to their size, meaning that they may not have as good traction as their big HO brothers. Or a combination of the two.

Does Z scale locos have traction tires? If no, then this has a big difference in traction vs. H0 scale. Most H0 locos can pull almost anything. Only some very lightweight small H0 locos have sometimes problems with 8-10 cars. I have "fixed" this issue by adding lead weights to my most lightweight H0 locos and now they pull very long and heavy trains like the bigger ones.

I believe the axle weights are not as big in Z scale than H0 scale scalewise and this is the reason why these smaller ones can have traction problems.

Janne

Another important factor: Z scale locos typically do not have traction tyres.

Model cars have a higher friction than prototype cars. To compensate for this, H0 models typically have traction tyres.

I don't know if an H0 model without traction tyres can pull more cars than a similar Z scale model. But most likely smaller scales will reduce the pulling power.

Tom

Marklin doesn't put traction tyres on Z scale locos. I did try out Bullfrog Snot on a couple of mine, but all it did was to reduce the traction of the driving wheels it wasn't applied to.

40+ see answer #8 in the link below. Although it's a reference to the MTL brand it should be similar for Marklin, but it would be interesting-fun to do a test with Marklin:
