I have just brought a red electric shunter engine off ebay. Marklin number 3157. I think it is a very pretty engine and I paid a fair price. I want to dismantle it but am a bit unsure as how to proceed . I understand I have to undo the screw under the slider pickup and leaver the body off with a screwdriver. This seems a bit drastic as the plastic body is quite fragile. Could someone confirm that this is the right way to go? Also being stupid I cannot locate the leaver to switch between overhead current and third rail again any help appreciated.

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

I don't have this loco, it's on my wish list but looking at the spare parts exploded view
There is a screw under one of the square caps on the engine hood. Don't try levering the body off.
Also the catenary changeover switch should be visible when the body is removed.
Be very careful how you handle this loco. I have seen far too many with the rail broken on the edge of the engine hood. Pity they didn't make this as a separately applied part.

Hi Geoff,

I have the 34561 which is the green Delta version of this loco. Michael is correct. There is a square cover on the top of the long hood which pops off to reveal a screw underneath. As far as I can remember you don't need to remove the screw under the wiper.

Michael and Ray,

Thanks for your help, much appreciated. Will try later to service engine as it is supposed to be from Father Christmas. The exploded view was very helpful, is there a site where you can see other engine details in the exploded view?

Yes it is on Marklin's site here.

Just enter the loco number where it says Artikel-Nr.: and hit Suchen. Exploded view is not always helpful when trying to dismantle a loco. Sometimes you need the little booklet that comes in the box with the loco to see how to remove the body. The booklet also instructs about maintenance and where to apply lube. Uufortunately, I know of no central depository for these booklets which would perhaps be a worthwhile project?
