Hello.

I need an instruction leaflet/diagram on how to set up the old control system using the direction changer switch 494N ?

Can anyone help or provide wiring diagram ?

Hi Neil,

UserPostedImage

The picture is a very early one, it shows the regulator rail, but the 494N connects the same way. The box just contains a rectifier and a pole changer switch.
I have never seen a working 494N. The selenium- rectifiers do not last +70 years. People using it today have replaced the rectifier with a modern one in the old case.

Regards

Markus

Hello Markus.

Thank you for the diagram , yes i will probably have to change the internal rectifier to new components.

I guess new modern rectifiers are quite cheap to buy from electronics shop.

Hi Neil,

Can you expalin the purpose of this equipment for those of us who have never seen these items?

Thanks.
Ray
Mostly Marklin.Selection of different eras and European railways
Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

Hello Ray.

Yes these 494N units were used to change the direction of the train , it basically generates a large pulse of electricity up to 20-volts which activates the internal reverse units fitted in Marklin locomotives.

As Markus mentioned the rectifier is probably no good now so can be replaced with a modern issue type fitted inside the old casing.

The later blue type controllers had the pulse switch built into them.

Marklin also used larger versions of the 494N for their 0-gauge locomotives in the 1930's.

Hi Neil,

Oh no, this is a big misunderstanding: The 494 are for locomotives of the ..700 series fitted with the U498 remote-switch. The U498 was just a diode switch for DC which switched the current in the one or other direction following the polarity. This DC system was also used on /70 trains in 0-gauge. Locomotives which use the pulse came in 1938 with the ..800 - series. The ..700 system was very easy damageable by short-currents.

Hallo Markus.

Thank you so much for pointing this out , i always thought that the 494N was used on early AC locomotives to change direction but now i know this is not the case , sorry Ray for the error in my information about 494N.

As Markus points out it was used for the 700 series with DC current.

So all the 700 series were DC current ?

Which controllers were first used in 1938 for the locomotives fitted with the pulse reverse unit inside ?

Many regards Neil.

Hi Neill,

The 700 locomotives had the traditional Märklin-Motor which can be run with DC or AC. DC was only used and needed for remote switching. ..800 locomotives needed a transformer 270A (with red switching knob) or the remote control 272A (for use with the AC-converter in areas with DC-mains).

Markus
