I have a permanent M track layout with multiple 5202 switches as well as 5117 switches. After expanding my layout and reconfiguring train sets and switches, I noticed that my the longer freight as well as passenger (e.g. 43584, 43485 DB Bi-level cars) derail when passing over the 5117 switch when using the turnout route. No problem is experienced when using the straight route provided by the switch.

Upon further investigation I noticed that the longer cars rub against the lantern associated with the switch thus causing the car derailment.

The 5202 switches have a smaller lantern and thus no derailment is experienced.

My question is there a fix for this problem, short of re-configuring my layout and or removing the offending switches and buying new switches?

Thank You

Jim Wallace

I went through the same thing on my M track. There are two possible solutions in my limited experience. You can remove the lanterns, not a great option if you want to keep the old M track in its original condition. In my case some of the lanterns were badly damaged and almost off anyway.

The other was to put the old style switches with the big lanterns in the freight yard where they are not a problem. That involves a bit of work taking up and putting down switches. I got some on e bay that had the smaller lanterns.

Sorry I do not have much of a solution. Hopefully someone else will do better for you.

Hi Jim,

I Have experienced the same problem.

The solution is to use 5137 switches which have same smaller lanterns as 5202 switches.

Best regards

Hi, Jim!

One day i have experienced the same problem with some of my M turnouts...

I solved the problem adjusting these parts referenced at the picture, they were loose...

Remove the turnouts and adjust them from bellow....

Hope it will work!!
