Hi!

I really like the dutch railways and I've always wondered why electric locos in the Netherlands almost everytime they set off, use two pantographs.
Then mostly after about 100 metres the front panto is lowered.

On the NS 1200 series I read somewhere that the use of two pantos had to do with avoiding overstressing the system supplying power to the traction motors up to 30 km/h. On these locos its a very intricate system reminicent of the "knallfrosch" system of the DB Br 141.

But the practice of using two pantos is still used, even on modern locos without the special requirements of the 1200 series. I've seen it used on locos like the Traxx Br 186. And also frequently on the series 1600 and 1700.

Anyone know why?

Best Regards!

Emil

Hi!

Voltage in the Netherlands is only 10% of the voltage in Germany (1,500 V in the Netherlands, 15,000 V in Germany).

German trains can draw up to 600 A, even more on some new lines. Locos in the Netherlands have to draw 6000 A to get the same power (but I don't know how many amps they really draw).

Pantographs in Germany have two wipers, those in the Netherlands have four wipers each. With two pantographs raised, the power flows through eight wipers.

BTW: The Knallfrosch is the BR 141.
Regards
Tom
