Hi,

My Marklin catalogue have two different NEM symbols but it doesn't explain what NEM is and Google can't either. The symbols are identical apart from the spacing.

I'm sure someone here will know?

Thanks

Hi Morsing,

NEM is just a set of standards like BS or DIN, but relating to model railways.

I believe it stands for "Norms Europeans de Modelisme" if you pardon my French.

In the Marklin catalogue the symbol represents locos or wagons fitted with the NEM standard coupler pocket, which allows you to clip in any coupler with the NEM shaft. The symbol with the closer spacing indicates that the loco or wagon is also fitted with the close coupler mechanism, which allows the couplers to "stretch" while going round curves and then compress again on straight track.

Does this answer your question?
