I've just bought a mismatched 2015. The loco is black and the tender green. Not a huge problem as I can easily obtain a black tender body.

However, what I can't make sense of is the coupling between loco and tender. The loco has the standard inverted L-shaped hook, but instead of the expected loop the tender has a metal rod.

I think it's probably a very early one as it's unpowered and has the old narrow coupler on the back, but the Greenberg's Guide I have mentions that the unpowered tenders had the wheels and gearing but no motor. This has plastic wheels and the chassis is two steel bars, with no gears or pickups:

Any thoughts? The rod looks like a factory item rather than something the last owner did, it has washers and a threaded end with a nut which don't suggest something home-made. I'm probably going to try adapting the coupler on the back of the loco as that's an easy part to replace, should I come across the matching loco for this tender and/or the matching tender for the loco.
