Is it possible to easily change the coupling to NEM pockets on a Marklin 3184 (SBB Am 4/4). The normal ones look really ugly.

Cheers

This model was rereleased in C-Sine with the number 39801. If the pivot point on the coupling of the 3184 is the same as the new model, you should be able to simply swap parts 32/33 and 7203 to equip the loco with a NEM pocket and close couplers. If the coupling was secured to the bogie by a screw, you would have to check how the more recent bogie is attached to the metal and whether swapping the plastic bogie parts for the newer ones will enable the use of the NEM socket shaft.

http://www.maerklin.de/s....php?artikelnummer=39801

This site seems to suggest that some modification is required to upgrade the couplings. Can you post a photo of the underside of the loco showing the bogie and coupling attachment as well as a photo of the coupler from the underside. If you have the instructions with the exploded view, can you post that as well?

You may be able to find a regular Maerklin coupler that would fit this model that would allow for less spacing between loco and car/coach.

The other option would be to replace your Maerklin model with this new one:

The 3184 is a livery variation of the famous 3021. So any close coupler that works for the 3021 should also work for the 3184.
I never heard of any - but maybe someone else has.

Later models with the same livery (3384, 39801) were made from the new mould and came with close couplers.
Be aware that the 39801 suffers from the voltage-sensitivity problem due to economized on-board electronics. I don't know whether Märklin still upgrade these electronics.

Tom

unless you convert the original coupler there is nothing out there which replaces the current one, well since than someone has produced couplers to suit some of the older locos

I agree that the couplers are quite ugly. I always run my 3021 with the front coupler removed, and this improves the looks considerably. Of course it means you can't run round a train and couple up at the other end, but I can live with that limitation.

This may be my only option, I suspect so.

Received the 3184 today and removed the front coupler, yes this is the simplest way to improve it's looks and I can also put up with only hitching wagons at one end.

Many thanks

I have a painful broken left wrist which stops me doing very small fiddly things but I have managed to fit one pocket but cannot fit a coupler in it because of my wrist. It is a delicate task. Too delicate for me at the mo.

I do not want to convert both couplers as I will consider one end front, old coupler removed, and the other rear with NEM 362 pocket.

Thank you for providing this excellent link! I have already ordered a set (including screws) from this exceptionally friendly and helpful seller who, BTW, not only sells within Germany as indicated in the auction description.
