Hi all,

Our family visited on 8th July Finnish Railway Museum in Hyvinkää. This is in Southern Finland. We go there at least once every year as we are interested in trains Cool . I took many photos there, so this topic will get many of them BigGrin . Weather was perfect. First some photos from outside in real 1:1 scale:

This Finnish Railway Museum area is also modelled very professionally there in 1:87 scale and the self made trees and other details are stunning. There is unfortunately glass windows in front of this nice diorama so they reflect badly in these photos:

I will continue with the photos taken from outside. Here you can see all tracks used previously and at the moment by VR Finnish Railroads. "Kiskot" means tracks in Finnish.

UserPostedImage

As you can see here in Finland the track width (6 = 1524 mm) is wider than in the most of the European Railroads, like Germany, France and so on (5 = 1435 mm).

And here the evolution of Finnish Railroads track supports from 1904 => 1997 => :

Now I will show you some Finnish locomotives. Last year I was with my oldest son (then only 5 years old) in both of these and they were driving them on the yard:

Here are photos of Tr2 nickname "Truman". This one is the strongest and most heavy weight steam locomotive in Finland. This one is my favourite Love Love Love ThumpUp . It is not small either. You can see this from some of these photos where my wife (170 cm height) and our youngest son are. Almost all the texts in the Museum are only in Finnish like you can see BigGrin.

In this link some info in English about this prototype Tr2 (scroll down until "Post-War Tr2 Finland"): http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/..._Ye#Post-War_Tr2_Finland

I also took many photos of 1:10 scale really nice steam locomotives, one diesel and a 1:8 scale garden train. But as these are not 1:1 prototypes I should post them in "Big Scale" section and not here...

It was a great day for us train maniacs ThumpUp .

Here is a link to Wikipedia site of Finnish Railway Museum. It is in Finnish, but copy the address to Google Translator and translate to English:

http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suomen_Rautatiemuseo

Here you can see that the Garden train is actually 1:8 scale and not 1:10. This can vary depending of the locomotive in use.

Hi again BigGrin ,

In Finland steam locomotive models type codings first big letters have this meaning:

H = Henkilöveturi (Passenger locomotive)
T = Tavaraveturi (Freight locomotive)
S = Sekalaiseen ajoon tarkoitettu veturi (Mixed service locomotive)
P = Paikallisveturi (Local traffic locomotive)
V = Vaihtoveturi (Switching locomotive)

Second smaller letter has this meaning:

r = Raskas (Heavyweight)
k = Kevyt (Lightweight)

There are maybe other meanings or letters, but I don´t know about them. I just thought that this will help better to understand the basic usage of these steam locomotive models.

Janne

Hi Gary,

It's my pleasure to show some Finnish railway stuff here as Märklin doesn't do any 1:87 models of them. I think this is mostly because of the different wider track width and very small markets anyway. They have done many Swedish SJ, Norwegian NSB and Danish DSB models. Also some Russian models. Two Russian steam locomotive models if I remember right. So I have not any Finnish models and will not ever have if Märklin will not do them in the future. Roco has one Finnish new era electric locomotive model, but it is too new for me. Here in Finland many model railroaders build their own locomotives and rolling stock. These are mostly 2-rail DC. This (and rivet counting BigGrin ) is not my thing, so I buy Märklin and enjoy their looks and pulling power ThumpUp .

Janne

Hi Åke,

Thank you very much for sharing these good photos. That Crocodile photo showing the size difference between gauge 1, H0 and Z is my favourite Love . I have to get one 1 gauge Crocodile as it looks so impressing Drool . I wish I would have been there back then. I started this wonderful hobby again in around year 2010, so unfortunately I was not visiting Finnish Railway Museum to see these all live.
