Good morning, I now have two CARGO Re 421 electric locomotives. One from the current starter set 29483 which I bought in 2012 and one that I just bought from flea bay from an older started set 29481, both new.

Since I'm a newbie I did not realize that Marklin made these with two different headlight colours, 29483 is white and 29481 is yellow. And after further Googling I now know everything there is to know about the 29481 from fellow forum member HO, Tom's post was very informative and his pictures stunning, thank you Tom!

I do have a question, did SBB have different colour headlights on their CARGO Re 421?

Maybe the 29483 have modern led lights as a fresh model.

When Marklin started using LED's they put yellow LED's in their model and that went on for way too long after more realistic white and warm white led's went into production. The yellow led's in your model are unlikely to be truthful to the prototype.

I have one of these as well and replaced the yellow LED's with warm white LED's by obtaining new light boards from Marklin (from the Trix 22148). I also replaced the decoder with a Lokpilot.

Yes: every loco has red and white lights. Wink

Märklin have economised that to either white only or yellow only. A loco pulling a train does not need red lights, so white lights only is a good compromise.

I tried to order a new board with white LEDs, part number 137084 but they are no longer available. Does anyone know of a alternative part number so that I can change the LEDs to white?

You can look up the parts for any recent Re 4/4II model from Maerklin or Trix, including the 37342, 37356, 37346, 37347, 22385, 22148.
At minimum, the ones for the 37347 should still be available. Maerklin is producing another model (37348) that will also have white LEDs.
If you upgrade the decoder, you can also access additional red LEDs that your original model did not have.

You will find that both of your locos have the same road number Re 421 374.
The other Maerklin model was 37345 which had number 421 387 and a slightly different livery at the ends.
