One of our shiny new Matangi EMU's in a bit of bovver !!

http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion...s-beyond-end-of-the-line

This particular line is a bit of an Orphan being a left-over from what was once the main line north through the Hutt Valley.

It was diverted north of Petone (Pet-Oh-Knee) to take the line more through the developing suburbs of the Hutt Valley and the line was cut at the last well-patronised station being Melling. The Motorway now takes much of the former trackbed before the line roughly rejoins the original route near Manor Park a little under 10km's further north.

"Brakes not operating"??, we'll see, that's one driver who will be getting some mandatory drug-testing about now just to rule that out Blushing

Obviously glad nobody seriously injured, it would not have been going too fast on that section, perhaps 50kph max but engine braking may have brought that down quite a bit to around 20kph?.

Clearly not, and you can see why such a design would exist, much less likely to bring the overhead down on the train in such an event.

I'm not sure how they could configure this particular terminus as shown, there's not a lot of spare land beside the track but perhaps they will revisit the design

There was some talk of moving the station 100 metres or so south to make room for a 2nd bridge over the Hutt River, but that seems to have gone nowhere.
