Confused
Hi,

I have been running Marklin Analogue for a couple of years and have decided to convert my layout to C-Track and convert my loks to some form of digital. To start off I have purchased a 60652 Mobile Station and Marklin 24088 HO C Track Feeder and intend to power the track using my existing 6647 32VA transformer.

I have tried looking through these forums to find a list of locos and what is needed to convert them to digital. I am not expecting miracles, just a basic conversion so they will run. The loco I am looking at are:

3098 BR 38
3083 ETAT
3094 Streamliner
3084 (BR 50)

Where would I find information on what type of motors these locos have and what kits or changes are needed to convert them? ANy help is appreciated.

Cheers,
Kim

You can use Helmut Kern's website to help with motor identification for most Marklin locos up to about 2004.

http://www.hfkern.gmxhome.de/

The AJCKids website in the US has lots of good info on conversions, including a table of motor types

http://www.ajckids.com/TRAINS/MAIN.ASP?nr=92

There are 3 motor conversion kits:

60941 - DCM conversion kit
60943 - SFCM conversion kit
60944 - LFCM conversion kit

So, for your locos

3098 BR 38 - SFCM
3083 ETAT - LFCM - see https://www.marklin-user...p-needed.aspx#post249506
3094 Streamliner - LFCM
3084 (BR 50) - DCM - see http://www.saebonet.com/svein/Tog/sites/d/3084.htm

Keep in mind that the LFCM can have 2 armature types (7 tooth and 8 tooth versions) and 2 different motor face plates. You need to select the correct types for the loco you are converting. Both types are included in the 60944 kit.

A few members have some good information on their personal websites.

One of my favourites is Intruder's website, where you will find some information on the 3084:

http://www.saebonet.com/svein/Tog/sites/d/3084.htm

Some conversions can be found within this site. A search should help you here.

Once you have done your first one, the next ten are easy. Laugh

Good to see you are still here and active! I read a number of your earlier posts and you list a lot of links to material I would like to read. The links from back in 2009 unsurprisingly no longer work. I was interested in the Marklin_Insider_-_Marklin_Digital.pdf file. Do you still have it around?

Cheers and thanks for the quick reply.

Hi Kim, the files in the links you mention were deleted because some unscrupulous people were downloading the files, burning them to DVD, and then on selling them at a profit without any acknowledgement of where they got them from or who did the hard work in scanning the documents the files came from (mostly me, but some I obtained off the internet).

I still have the Marklin Digital book file, but at 150mb, it is rather large.

Kim,

What you will find out of the 4 locos you can convert 1 with a digital conversion set 60901 (3084) without modifications.

all the others need special attention to be able to fit a new brush plate (60904) for a high efficiency motor to be installed.

however you could use an ESU permanent magnet and use the current collector and brush plate.
so before buying up big and wasting your money you may have to follow the links which have been provided, I did a successful conversion for one of our members but can't remember how I did it.
What you will find using the 2 options I've mentioned by using the perm. magnet you will not get the smoothness at low crawling speed and the other option you have to make modifications and again if you stuff it up you need a new brush plate.

regards.,

John

Thanks for all the great help so far. I am slowly getting the idea.

So, firstly I have to upgrade the motors to accept DC current. Marklin has kits to upgrade the motors based on the motor type:

60941 - DCM conversion kit
60943 - SFCM conversion kit
60944 - LFCM conversion kit

After having fitted these kits

3098 BR 38 - SFCM
3083 ETAT - LFCM
3094 Streamliner - LFCM
3084 (BR 50) - DCM

I would need to get decoders and wire them in. This is the bit I am not getting. What type of decoders do I need? Should I used Marklin ones or other brands? Will the same decoder work for all engines?

I am sorry for asking so many questions. I am reading your links and the information you are providing but some appear to contradict each other and I become confused.

Cheers,Blushing

Hi Kim

Far from being a conversion guru, after all of two conversions, I have converted my Marklin BR12 (3310) with the Marklin 60760 kit and I have put an Uhlenbrock 75000 into my BR216 (3074).

I am really not good with electronics and feel completely out of my depth, with some assistance from Johnvr, it's actually a breeze. The 60760 kit comes with all that is needed (motor included) and besides a little soldering it's close to a 'drop-in-and-play' option. I am not sure about the other loco's you have but the 60760 will work for the 3084. I plan on putting this kit into the two 3084's I have.

The Uhlenbrock 75000 is just the decoder, so if your current motor needs replacing then you would need to source that separately. Unfortunately the motor in my 216 does need replacing so although it is now digital, it's running characteristics are not all that great.

Hope that helps in some way.

I have found some decoders and have ordered them. They won't be arriving for about 3 weeks. These decoders claim that the motors will not need to be updated for the SFCM and LFCM motors so I am still looking to source a 60941 - DCM conversion kit for the 3084 (BR 50) - DCM motor. This is looking pretty good so far **touch wood**
