Hi all,

I got today many Märklin catalogs which I bought some days ago. I had already before many catalogs, but today None of them are really old, but might be interesting for someone as there are SF (Finland), SV (Sweden), D (Germany), DK (Denmark) and DI (Germany) catalogs. I have also many newer, but I tought that this 1989 is a good ending as it is 25 years old catalog. Maybe all of these are too new to this "Collector´s Corner", but I decided to post this list anyway...Blushing I am interested in to know what those letters in the end means? I know the month and year thing like 07 68 = July 1968, but what about the letters? From 1982 => there are "fi" in the end. Does it mean that these were printed in Finland Blink ? Also many newer 1989 => 2004 catalogs have that "fi" in the end, but not the very newest ones.

• 1961/62 SF mk 6-pages only ”Märklin sen olla pitää” 162 81 – TNA 07 61 th (in English "Märklin it should be")

Hi Janne,
Thanks for rising the question. I don't know the answer and I am also interested in it.
I have the 1955 catalog and all catalogs from 1961/62 except (1978 and 1987 are travelling to my home at the moment):
65/66
66/67
71 and 72 (I have but not in good condition)
1973 to 1975
1984

I want to have all after 1955, but for now I am focused in those after 1964.
My catalogs are all in english (I think 1 is in french but don't remember exactly which one, except it is from the 90ies).
I have them in pdf and usually I read them in pdf and only sometimes I go to the real ones. This way I protect the real ones more.
Best regards,
Miguel

I love the old catalogues. Sorry can't answer your question though. I have the ones from 1952 to about 1971. The period of Marklin that I am interested in. Not only for the rolling stock but for spare parts lists and layout plans which are I some of them.

HI Janne,

interesting list.

The letters at the end are an abbreviation for the print office: "fi" stands for J.Fink, Ostfildern, "th" means Thiemig AG, München and "kl" is Klett, Stuttgart. The meaning of the other letters can be found in most cases somewhere in the catalogue.

Regards

Markus

Markus already answered that the letters at the end are an abbreviation for the print office, so fi does not mean printed in Finland... "fi" stands for J.Fink, Ostfildern. Some of my catalogs are in very good condition and some are not. I also read mostly my catalogs in .pdf format as I have all Märklin catalogs from 1935-1955 in German and from 1949? (not sure) to 1979 in English. I got them on DVD and copied them to my computer. It is really fast way to find things when browsing catalogs in .pdf format vs. paper catalogs and the best thing is that the old paper catalogs don´t get to bad condition and can stay almost untouched.

Hi Janne,

The letters in the middle stand for the pieces printed. The code to read them is TOYMARKLIN.

1=T
2=O
3=Y...
...
9=I
0=N

Capital letters stand for thousand, lower case letters for hundred.

Some examples:

TAN = 150,000
TA= 15,000
Ta= 1,500

KKR= 776,000

ARA= 565,000

The system was used from the early 1930s until ~1995. It was also used on boxes and manuals.

Regards

Markus

My catalogues are the English language ones and vary in condition from fair to good.. All bought off eBay over the years. The value is in personal satisfaction rather than money. I started in Marklin in 1953.....

Hi Janne,

As you mentioned I was a little bit surprised about the existence of Finnish catalogues.

Maybe other members know other "uncommon" languages or countries. For example I have never seen pre-war catalogues in Polish, Czech or Hungarian. From South America I only have this 1938 catalogue for Argentina. If there is one for Argentina, what's about Chile or Brazil? I got some Spanish manuals for the construction-kits from Chile, so it is likely that that also catalogues exist.

I hope you didn't have to pay for the DVD. I have all Marklin catalogs from about 1935 to 2012 in pdf format. Most of those I scanned myself. I made them available freely on the internet to share with the Marklin community, but certain schmucks were downloading the catalog files, burning them to DVD then selling them at a profit, without acknowledging where they came from and who scanned them. Because of this I had to take them off the internet.

I'd be interested in seeing a list of the file sizes of the pdf files that you have.
