Recently, I saw many dispersed posts floating around with photos of train ferries and barges:

I think this fascinating topic deserves a topic by itself. I start by focusing on the Mississippi River in the USA and post two photos of the 3rd "Ste Genevieve", a Missouri-Illinois rail car ferry retired in 1961 plus one of the car ferry W.B. Duncan at Helena, Arkansas.

M/S Malmöhus - Went between Malmö, Sweden - Copenhagen, Denmark between 1945-1986....

Carried passengers too until 1974.

I remember going with this ferry as a kid to Denmark where I saw the 87/1 scale 3067 for the first time at the Copenhagen main station in the 60's...
Even remember what I ate in the ferry restaurant on that particular trip - "Hakkeböf"... BigGrin

Later it was modified & painted black (1976)...

The Rheinhausen–Hochfeld train ferry on the Rhine between Rheinhausen and Hochfeld, now districts of Duisburg in Germany, built by the Rhenish Railway Company commenced operations in 1866. In the background is the Duisburg-Hochfeld rail bridge which eventually replaced the ferry. The latter ran until 1874.

From 1909 until 1998 there was a railway ferry calling the German port of Sassnitz on the island of Ruegen, linking Germany and Sweden (Trelleborg). In 1998 operations moved to the nearby modern facilities at Mukran. Currently, railway passenger services are offered only by the Berlin-Night-Express Malmö–Berlin which is operated by a commercial operator, i.e. none of the state railways. The first attachment shows a recent postal memorial stamp, while the two black and white images reflect the situation during the time of the German Democratic Republic.

Wondered when something from my home town would come up. Those seas are mild too ... Scared

As mentioned in the comments, it is also a rail ferry, has three tracks inside, but the points are all on the quay ... Confused

I must see if I can find the link to a picture of the link bridge with all the tracks on it.

I agree - being from an NZR family I recall turning up to the Wellington terminal on a number of occasions to find the ferry sailing cancelled. Have a look at these for a bit of nostalgia;

THis may have been the day my sailing was cancelled.

Not sure I'd want to park there...
