Thanks for the poll, Stephen.

I voted for all three because I buy stock very often on impulse. Usually I'll buy a single item or a set because it goes well with a loco I might already have, but sometimes I take a fancy to an item that's been split from a set and I buy it too!

Hi Stephen and Ray,

I voted exactly the same !
I like sets, but I like to find from-set-items-low-priced to add to a consist, and I also like buying one new to check quality and behavior on tracks .

Best regards
Joël

Hi,

I voted for all three options as I bought rolling stock from dealers splitting some sets, complete car sets or single cars.

Cheers,
Janne

I voted for all three.

I try not to buy splits, but there have been occasions where I've done it.

I believe the first time was when I got the ÖBB 1043 010-6 from the set 2843. I believe I bought it from Schweiger in Nürnberg and I was lucky that they had sold the coaches that I didn't want (because I had already similar from Roco but 30 cm long) and therefore I got it with the box. I later cut away the coach part from the Styrofoam bottom and cut and glued the cardboard top to a lid and got myself a nice box for the lok.

After that I've bought a few wagons, coaches and electric loks from broken up starter sets and of course not got any box. This can be OK for wagons, coaches, diesel and electric loks but I don't want to do it with steam engines since there could be too many things that could be broken off without a box even if wrapped in bubble wrap.

Recently I have bought sets (American freight car sets, lumber car set) but I also buy singles due to interest in the car's look. Once in a while I buy one car from a set (split) for the same reason.

Some items cannot be found outside of one of those "Packs" or Startsets, so those will have to be found broken up from dealers or on ebay. Single units are easily available from dealers. Whole multi item packs also from dealers.

More fitting question would be would you buy a whole pack/set just to get one specific item not available elsewhere?

Regards

Mike, that is an excellent question! Sometimes you want just one wagon or coach and the only way to get it is to buy a set that includes it, or wait for a dealer to start splitting up sets. I have to admit to doing both.

Another question we can ask ourselves is about the compostion of car sets. Sometimes I have bought a car set which could have been copied by buying the individual vehicles seperately, though I would have ended up with more than one wagon with the same number. Is it important to us whether the car numbers are repeated in a consist? Also, is it cheaper to get individual cars or a pack? This is not always obvious.

Stephen's poll is very interesting because it opens up a whole series of questions about how we decide on the composition of the trains we run on our layouts.

Interesting Poll. Stephen, thank you.

Basically, I do not care. If I see an interesting single car or a car set I buy it . I have no preferenses.
The same goes for locomotives.

I'd like to see Marklin releasing more single items and some smaller sets.

I tend to buy sets and have only bought split engine sets. One example is the recent Krokodil: I wanted the Era 2 unit and luckily was able to purchase it from a person that only wanted the other.Cool

I'm very fond of the twelve pack sets all the same but with different numbers. Now if they would do one or more for Era 2..................................Cursing .

Of course there are many single cars not in sets that are "must have" items.BigGrin

Hi
I generally buy the Marklin set complete, for era III freight cars that I want.
Because I have the perception they are the best value.

However, I am sure I have purchased individual cars (from sets) from time to time.

And I also buy some individual cars.

regards
Kimball
