Hi guys,

In the included pictures i show you my vintage layout i build that will be shown at a local modeltrain fair from my club next month. It is all stuff dating from the period 1935 - 1954 and can run 2 separate locos. It's not completely finished yet, as you can see the lights are not connected and i have doubts if i should add the crane or not.

If you have remarks on what else could be added, i will gladly consider it Smile .
The track plan was based on ann older post i found some years ago in this forum (i think).

Hi Dirk!
Congratulations
Superb layout, the kind of "Classic" I like personally too.
By all means, install the crane, it is even the right version with the little spotlight.
However, for transportation I would have it removed, just in case!
Let us know where and when you will display it, I know at least of two other people in Belgium who do have a similar approach and I am sure would be delighted to see your layout and exchange ideas with you!
Cheers

Hi,

thanks for all replies. All the plastic vehicles you see are Marklin vehicles mostly from the 860 range only made in 1953 and 1954 (for most models) So the 3 busses are Marklin 860/8 E and 860/M. See my posts in this thread for some more info about those forgotten vehicles: marklin 860 series.

There is also 1 Marklin pico car 5519/61 from 1939-1940 (it's the little racecar you can see). The other vehicles you can see are early Lesney - Matchbox ones. Other ones i might add are some small early dinky's from the 35 range and some early Lego plastic cars (yes those are also about 1/87 scale)

For those interested in wanting to see this life, here is the link with all info (only in dutch) Mobexpo.

Yes, the old prewar transformer was used for the 2 days and didn't failed at all. It's even with the original wire and in perfect condition. I have other transformers from that era where the wires are crumbled and unsafe, but this one is just perfectly preserved.

Hi Dirk,

Great old stuff ThumpUp . I really like to see them in operational condition. It is respectable when everything works and is around 60-80 years old. Those kids were very lucky who had model railways in the 1930's. Usually kids had only very simple toys back then. This shows how well everything was built those days. I don't think that the current new models will work in around year 2100, but these old precision toys will Wink .

Regards,
Janne

Thank you geoff. It took me some 20 years to collect all this stuff, some from local sales, some from the internet and some from occasional adds or just people who knew i had interest in old stuff and that had found something from their father or uncle who passed away.

Thanks for bringing up this wonderful thread. I love these old layouts, full of nostalgia and a longing for a long lost childhood! BigGrin

Although my interest is firmly dedicated to more realistic, modern products, I have great respect for the beauty and quality of these early models. In my collection I retain a small core of locos from around 1960, and I plan to add a couple more as time and space allows. Earlier models are also desireable, but I have to draw the line somewhere.

While looking at the marvelous photos in this thread, the thought also came to me about how much the hobby has progressed in terms of realism and scale accuracy, but of course this progress would not be possible without the early beginnings we see in these old models.

Occasionally I read a thread on this forum that inspires me, and this is definitely one of those!

Hello Dirk.

I am glad the exhibition you attended was a great success , anyone who knows a little about early Marklin railways cannot fail to be impressed with your efforts.

Was it hard to find the early 407 type catenary wire / metal strips , as these seem very hard to find now ?

Regards Neil.
