Hello Gordon,

Thank you for sharing this delightful video.
What beautiful winter scenery!
I did not realise that there were still areas that used semaphore signals - or was this an area of private railway?
AND double-headed tank locomotives!

Regards,

PJ

The steam engines are narrow gauge found in the Harz mountains (former East Germany/DR) called "Harzer Schmalspurbahnen" (HSB). A bit more info from Wiki, but if you Google it you will find a lot more:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harz_Narrow_Gauge_Railways

I believe it's operated as a tourist line these days, a historical private railway. LGB (and others) have made a lot of models of HSB locos and stock over the years. Double heading small tanks due to the hard grades along this line. I don't believe this railroad has any larger locomotives (since it is narrow gauge), but I think they have some diesels.

As far as the V200 and signals, I do not know the answer.

Hi All,

Thanks for the likes and great comments. The Guys at Westfallendampf seem to do a nice job with their excursions and videos, would love to take one of their trips one day.

The awesome V200 033 is privately owned and operated by Hammer Eisenbahnfreunde, Hamm. Interesting scene at 2:24 when Maybach #2 losses its coolant into the atmosphere, yet soldiers on with only one engine providing power.

Semaphores are still being used in some areas on the DB, I love the shot of them in action at Bahnhof Oker (Goslar).

The HSB is just fantastic! a daily operating mostly steam powered narrow gauge railway, hard to believe in this day and age.

Cheers,

Gordon

The HSB is a wonderful line - in fact there are three separate routes worked by a mixture of steam locos and diesel railcars. My avatar is one of the big 2-10-2 tanks arriving at Wernigerode Westerntor station.
