Hi,

The Marklin Export Models Catalogue 2014 now available, lists both Trix HO and Trix Express.

Could someone describe, please, the difference between these versions.
I have my guess that it is the coupler system, but maybe there is more.

regards
Kimball

Hi Kimball,

What today is TRIX H0, former named TRIX INTERNATIONAL, is a 2-rail DC-railway like Fleischmann, ROCO, JOUEF, RIVAROSSI.... and all the other international players.
TRIX-EXPRESS was introduced in 1935 and is the traditional TRIX-system: It is a three-rail-system with a center rail. Since 1953 the locos run on DC. The center - rail is common ground and the loco takes the current from either the left or right rail. So it is possible to control two locos on the same rail. So in GB and the Commonwealth the British TRIX-company (which was an independent spin-of) marked the system as TTR - TRIX TWIN RAILWAYS.
TRIX-EXPRESS uses special wheel-sets which are not compatible to any other system.

Markus

Hi Markus,
That is a great reply.
Yes, I had wondered if Trix Express and Trix TTR were one and the same.

It amazes me that to this day, original users of Trix TTR can still get new models.
It was quite a forward system.

Kimball

I thought I read somewhere that TRIX was originally branded as TRI-X .

Some interesting history here:

Hi,

The name TRIX was originally the name of a metal - construction - kit which was made from 1931 by ANFOE (Andreas Foertner Nachfahre (engl.: successor)) in Nuremberg. Stephan Bing bought this old tin-toy company (founded in the 1830s) after the liquidation of the BING-company in 1930. The "X" should associate the word "Tricks" (known also in German) with the X-shape of the holes in the stripes ("Tricks" and "Trix" is spoken identically in German). It also contains "TRI" which is also understood as an expression for "three" here and describes the three lines of holes.
An early TRIX-set, still using the ANFOE-brand:

When the railway was introduced in 1935 the name of the metal-construction-set was much more popular than the original name of the manufacturer so they decided to name the railway like the construction-kit.
Stephan Bing was Jewish. So he was forced to sell his company in 1938 and emigrate to Britain. Stephan Bing had a long business relation to Bassett Lowke who as also started a British production - the TTR. So from 1938 Bing worked for Bassett Lowke, he died in 1940.

Yes, TRIX Twin and TRIX Express are similar systems as Markus described, the original being TRIX Express from Germany. There is an excellent history written by Tony Matthewman on the History of TRIX in Britain. TRIX Twin did not go DC until 1956.
