Not sure where to place this:

Certainly there are 1,000s of books about rail road history and the one I was given is likely 'not special'. But I felt it is worth mentioning. A co-worker left this on my desk 'The Harvey House Cookbook' (by George Foster & Peter Weiglin). The book is a history of Fred Harvey (mostly) and the Santa Fe RR and the development of quality dining along the Santa Fe line(s) from Kansas City to California. The book includes menus from the late 1800's to the mid-1950's. When I first received this, I took a quick look at the back cover and reference to 'Harvey Girls' kept me reading. Confused a bit but then read more about the introduction of standardized but high quality food and service where ever one was on the Santa Fe line.

Quick and enjoyable read. May try some recipes.

Regards

Harvey (of course).

Harvey, you are going to have to post some of your favorite recipes after you try some.

Era 3
DB lokos, coaches and freight cars from across Europe
But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs
ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control.
With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397.

Hi there,

Another book is "Dinner in the Diner" about US railroad dining fare in general, quoting the menus of most main-line railroads.
Unfortunately I don't have the book to hand so am unable to give you author and publisher.

I know Clam Chowder figures prominently, as does steak in beetroot sauce.
Ah grand old days indeed.

regards
Kimball

HO Scale - Märklin (ep II-III and VI, C Track, digital) - 2 rail HO (Queensland Australia, UK, USA) - 3 rail OO (English Hornby Dublo) - old clockwork O gauge - Live Steam 90mm (3.1/2 inch) gauge.

I have read that book, not only was the food excellent, but the china, tables and service would put many 5-star restaurants to shame,...

They can still be found,an example:
