Good morning Everyone,

Just wanted to briefly introduce myself, I'm a Swiss fellow who now lives in the USA, but growing up in Switzerland with my dad being a train driver got me the ''virus'' pretty early on. It's in my 20's that I started collecting locomotives, at first it was only the ones my old man drove, but soon I found myself buying even the ones he didn't, then I started getting the ones from the BLS (another railway company in Switzerland...)

Most of my models are Märklin, but collecting SBB/CFF locs also made me buy some Hag's, Roco and even a Rivarossi model... I've seen a few posts that talk about Croc farm, and I have to say I'm am very much a crocodile lover myself, I have the a couple of 3015 (one with the manual shifter or whatever it is called in English) the 3056, 3652, 30159, 37569 (weathered) and 39569 (snowy)... I was blown away to see that there are croc collector basically all over the world! this is just awesome. I wonder if many of you do collect Swiss locs like I do, cuz let's admit it: they look sharp

Anyway, I'm not too sure how to add pictures to this post... need to figure this out, but I wanted to introduce myself to the community.

Cheers and HAppy New Year everyone,

Alain

Thank you, appreciate the message...

I see you are into Steam Engines... have to say I love these as well, I'm looking at a BR 05 right now, the insider model # 37050. I had it years ago and I sold it when I kind of reorganized my collection around the Swiss railway but I regret selling that darn BR 05... so pretty in that red livery.

Welcome to the forum. It is always nice to see another fan of Swiss trains

By the photos, it looks like most of your models are Maerklin or Hag. Do you have other companies as well? (Roco, RailTop, LSM, ACME, etc)?

If Maerklin doesn't make a model of a particular type and another company makes a good model, I have no hesitation about adding it to my collection.

Regards

Mike C

Thank you Mike!

Love the picture of your avatar! is it the Marklin #37343? I have that one and I love the colors, beautiful train... Still one of my favorite!

You are right my models are mostly Marklin and Hag, I love both companies. To me, Hag put even more details into its models, the "bumpers" (is it the correct word?) for example are spring loaded on the Hag models, that is sweeeeet! Than the roofs are just fabulous and very detailed.

Roco does do a good job too, but it's a little under Marklin and Hag, Rivarossi does some models that no one else does like the little Ae 3/5. Liliput also, and then you have the almighty Lemaco etc...

How big is your Swiss loc collection Mike?

Thanks for the kind word and greeting from New Jersey! Alain

Alain,

the avatar photo is actually the recent Roco Re 4/4 78401. It is one of my recent Roco acquisitions that I am very happy with.
The difference between this model and the Hag 216 or the Maerklin 37343 is that the Swiss crest has been correctly repositioned so that it is fully in the beige painted section. (See photo) (From L to R: Roco 78401, Maerklin 37343, Hag 216)
I run this lok with my assorted 1/87 TEE coaches from Roco and Lima. My Hag and Maerklin loks have been relegated to the Trix 23477 TEE Roland Set (1/93) and my Maerklin 42991 TEE Helvetia Set (1/100).

When you compare the Roco, Maerklin and Hag Re 4/4IIs, each one has it's aspects where it is the best and each one has it's weak points. They are all just as treasured to me and each one has a home in my collection.

I am currently waiting for the Roco Re 4/4II in the Bourret art livery and the Re 10/10 in SBB Cargo colours (including the Re 420 Cargo). From Maerklin, I am waiting for the 37347 Re 420 LION. All of these items should arrive in the next few weeks.

Regards

I love that quote from Mike C... that says a lot about your passion!

Nice picture you made and I have to tell you I never noticed the Swiss crest was too low on Marklin and Hag models, now I feel silly as it seems so obvious...

I also have the Bourret model but the one from Hag, I will have to check on the position of that crest! It's a beautiful model though! You have to love these Re 4/4 II

Thank you for the education Mike!

Welcome to the forum Alain. Most of my 100+ locos are German, but I do have a few Swiss locos - 4 Crocs, 2 Re 10/10's, Re460, Ae 6/6, which I like very much.

Our Marklin club here in NZ has a few Swiss collectors, including one member who has seven 1 Gauge Crocs and a scratchbuilt 1 Gauge Ae 6/6.

G'day Brigdaddynz,
That's what I like about that forum, members from all over the world!
The crocs must be one of the most successful models ever made, no way you can just have one. I'm trying to add the black one to my farm...
But a 1 gauge croc??? I'd love to see that

Welcome to the forum Alain! You have a great Collection.

I have 17 Swiss Märklin locomotives. 16 of them are electric locomotives: 13 Crocodiles, 3 Ae 6/6 and one is steam locomotive 37131 Eb 3/5 "Habersack". I will get soon my first non-Märklin SBB locomotive. Liliput Ae 4/7. It´s analog and modified for 3-rail Märklin use. I will maybe convert it later to Digital with ESU LokPilot 4.0 decoder. Then I have a confirmed deal of two Märklin SBB models 37591 Ae 8/14 and 37521 De 6/6 "baby Crocodile" Wink . I will get both 37591 and 37521 for only 200 euro, but they have some issues. I will replace the frame of 37521 (or maybe Märklin Service will...) as it has that zink-pest issue and frame is broken Sad . But when it will be fixed they will be a great addition into my Collection. Then I have 20 SBB locomotives and for me it´s about enough as I collect locomotives from many European countries.

Cheers,
Janne

Salut Jacques,

Thanks for the message, let me know where I can see your layout. You mentioned the Gotthard, this brought back memories... there is an awesome layout of the Gotthard in Luzern, I'm sure you know about it, here is the link:

I have close to 100 locs and ''control car'' (not sure if it is the right word), the Ae 8/14 you are getting is an awesome train, nice and heavy, good job from Marklin on that one. I have the DE 6/6 too but in Green looks like you are getting the braun one. You should look into the RE 4/4 II, these are beautiful machines too, the RE 6/6 and even the good ole RE 4/4 I look great....

Thank you for the message, nice collection you have!

You pick my interest with the story of the croc from Roco, I've been looking at them myself but so far all my crocs are Marklins.

Nothing special really!

Years ago, I went into a shop in London which at the time was one of my regular suppliers of Marklin. This was Beatties of London, in High Holborn. They subsequently became Modelzone, but even that is closed down now. ThumbDown

On my way to the counter with the Marklin locos in it I happened to find myself in front of another cabinet with odd specimens from different manufacturers. One of the models in the cabinet was a Roco 3 rail crocodile. The price tag on it was 100 pounds, which was more than I was prepared to spend at that time. The following day I changed my mind and went back to the shop with the intention of buying it anyway, but it was no longer there. I've regretted my hesitation ever since!

Hi again Alain,

I have my locos in their display cases and it is very difficult to take good photos of them all. You can view my locomotive Collection in this thread to see them better. Individual photos are later in the same thread:

Janne75's Locomotive Collection

Yes, 37521 is the brown De 6/6 version. 37591 is very big locomotive and it will be actually my longest Märklin locomotive, if 3028 + 4028 "combo" of DB BR 515 is not thought together as a locomotive. 3702 DRG BR 53 is the longest "single" locomotive in my Collection at the moment...

I should extend my Swiss locomotive collection later with those RE 4/4 II, RE 6/6 and RE 4/4 I if their prototypes are old enough (not newer than around 1970's). I prefer green or brown color Swiss locomotives. Habershack steam loco and the black and white Crocodiles are the exceptions...

Cheers,
Janne

Very nive Janne! I love the setting you have to take your pictures. Looks really great.

Let me ask you this: Do you think one has to modify the analog trains and make them all digital or is it better to keep them in the original condition or it doesn't matter? For me it doesn't matter as I don't really run them a lot, I just love looking at my trains, I do run them on a lousy little oval track I have, maybe once a year to make sure all is working the way it is supposed to, but I enjoy looking at them...

 Cheers, Alain

Wow! This one looks more like an Ae 6/6, but doesn't matter look at the details on that loc! This is what fascinate me about collecting these locs. The amount of details they put into it, I have to tell you my friend this red loc looks phenomenal! Darn cabin looks so realistic and so does the hoses in the front... I'm sure you Br58 look amazing too, looks like you weathered it... Awesome! Thanks for sending these pics!

Sorry, you're right, it is an Ae 6/6 - it's not a Marklin model, it's either a Kiss, KM1 or Hübner model.

The Br58 is factory weathered by Marklin - here's a better picture of it

Very nive Janne! I love the setting you have to take your pictures. Looks really great.
Let me ask you this: Do you think one has to modify the analog trains and make them all digital or is it better to keep them in the original condition or it doesn't matter? For me it doesn't matter as I don't really run them a lot, I just love looking at my trains, I do run them on a lousy little oval track I have, maybe once a year to make sure all is working the way it is supposed to, but I enjoy looking at them...
Cheers, Alain

Good morning Alain,

Thanks for your kind words ThumpUp . I´m not going to digitalise all my locomotives. I like to keep many of them analog. For me many of them are also "display case queens" and I just run them seldom to just keep them in the working condition. I have two same locomotives of some of them, so one can stay as original and other is digitalised. As you don´t run your locomotives often and have many locomotives too I would suggest that you just keep your analog locomotives original = analog. For me too it´s really nice to look at my trains. I have 100 digital or delta-digital locomotives so no need to digitalise all of them. I like also the "sound" = noise Smile of original reversing unit so some of them needs to have it! BigGrin

Cheers,
Janne

Good morning Joan,

You my friend, you have a Croc addiction! I see you have the black crocodile, I'm kind of looking at that one as well to add to my collection, but I'm still debating... I love the look of the loc, but so far I always stays with models that actually existed in real life. But I love the look of it in black...

Congratulation to you, I have to say I haven't seen anyone with that many Crocs!

Cheers, Alain

Hi Joan,

Thanks for very good photos ThumpUp . I just have to get that older black Crocodile 39564 sooner or later... It looks great Love and it's value has raised pretty good too. But the snowy Crocodile must be the most expensive one today from these "newer" digital versions? The most expensive Crocodiles are the old analog CCS 800 versions from 1947 to the start of 1950's. There is one exception to this though, the Platinium version from year 2000 Märklin 32000. According to my Koll's 2012 Special catalog it's value is 32000 euroScared ...

Cheers,
Janne

The snow Korkodile there's only one digital 39569 and for ebay three auction finished between 550-650 €... is os expensive. I paid 800€ for two units..
From 1994 in my collection lefts: 29560 Startset, 31860 150th of Marklin special pack, 32000 Platinium for obvious reason :-)
Rest of Marklin Korkodiles are on my collection.
And I NEED a real 3015, no from 1947... form 60's are ok for me

They're all beautiful models!

I only have a green one for now (39563 SDS), but I would love to complement it with a brown one. Since they came out with the new tooling I would prefer it to be one of those. I really like the different style of drive to the wheels.

Good evening Alan, I like your name by the way BigGrin
That z gauge croc look really cute, I have a little z gauge track for my kid (working hard on passing the train bug to the next generation) and they r need size.
Your ccs 800 collection on the other hand... This is stunning? 8 of them? Wow, I've been trying so often to buy one, they are just out of my league or they seem in poor shape and I'm not sure I could restore one properly...
These Rbe from Hags are neat too, awesome Swiss collection you have there Sir. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you Glenn,
Appreciate the kind words, it's been amazing so far, can't believe the number of people worldwide with Swiss models in their collection. Switzerland being such a tiny country.
