Hi everyone. I've been lurking on here for a few years and thought I'd start to contribute. A little backstory: in the 80s my dad decided to get into Marklin with me and my older brother. We live right by an Air Force base and that apparently allowed the local hobby shop to have a steady supply of fresh Marklin imports. We have quite a bit of current/80s Marklin items, but we also acquired a lot of vintage Marklin from the hobby shop's owner. After looking around here it seems like one of the locomotives I have might be of interest in this forum. It's a TP800 as far as I know. If anyone has any additional insight or info on it I'd love to know. I'll try to post some of the other vintage items we have as well in the near future. Thanks for looking.

Mike and welcome to the forum.

I would look after it a bit more by preventing it from going rusty. the condition overall looks good.

the TP 800 (3004) was produced between 1948-1949 with the correct coupling (4.2) as shown in picture, second version produced in 1950 with the reversing lever in the front

Bit of both I reckon.

I see very very (barely noticeable) mild surface rust, and also some Dust in the corners - the dust is often easily removed with a soft paint brush, some of the rust may also come off with a good clean and a gentle wipe-over.

Hi Mike
That button is the manual inversion lever that presses the relay.
There is also an interesting wheels driven friction inverter device for the directional lights inversion.
Nice loco indeed, this one ie easier to handle as it has the bulbs attached from the outside.
The first version with its lights mounted from the inside was a little more complicated to handle ...

The TT800 2-8-2 "evolution" that came one year later had similar features.

It's really dust more than anything. It runs fine but there is some sparking where it hits the track. I know that in the 25 or so years that I've had it the only time it has been run is about a month ago. I'd imagine it needs a good oiling and cleaning more than anything. Any suggestions for getting it more track-worthy?

Well, first it looks like it still has the "spoon" type pick ups, so it is **imperative** to have it run on a solid 3 rail track layout (no pukos/ center stud!!)

Then the wheels at that time were often un-plated cast , i.e. bare ZAMAK and they tend to "pit" creating unreliable contacts with the track and consequently pick up a lot of crud from the track.
(Starting around 1952, lok wheels got nickel plated and were much more durable/reliable)

Best remedy is careful cleaning of the wheels with a drop or two of lighter fluid. (Careful, as the paint may be stripped with the fluid)

But be **very cautious** when you turn the wheels: it is very easy to have the drivers slip on their axles and de-synchronize the whole side rod mechanism

Make sure you remove the brushes on the motor to minimize friction, and clean (lighter fluid again) all gears and bearings + oil all of them.

Disassembly is a little tricky, requiring a specific sequence...and special care while trying to loosen the various screws: corrosion may have settled in, and these oldies all have some mild amount of Zinkpest, just enough to strip the threads in the chassis and/or body.

(But if that happens, don't panic! I have successfully repaired these in the past!!)

If you have difficulties, let me know , I can post pictures from the old style "exploded views" which would clarify the process a bit
