Greetings all,

Have spent quite some time since signing up looking through the threads and have found many informative but nothing that helps me with my current query. So here comes my very first post.

I recently obtained 2 NOS 60173's to use with a 60215 CS2 (and 2 MS2's).

Question is, will a 6003 (UK/AUS 6002) PSU work with them, at a rough guess the 52va should give me a 2.5A max from them assuming they are compatible and most importantly reliable.

The 60052's are rare as rocking horse poop in Australia and I can currently get hold of 2 6003's rather cheapish at a ton each.

OR should I try and see if I can get them exchanged through a dealer for 60174's Confused

Sorry if I've been clear as mud.

Thanks in advance.

Sad when its cheaper to buy a new 29640 starter set from Germany than a CS2 on its own in Oz, welcome to the joys of Marklin down under .

The 60173 does not have galvanic insulation. One device without that insulation is OK for a layout, two mean trouble. You have two 60173 and I'd try to have them exchanged.

The power question remains: The CS2 supports the 60 VA power supply and the 60 VA transformer. I presume it's the same for the boosters.

The booster will allow 3 A track current. If your transformer only allows 2.5 A, there may be situations where the transformer switches off (overheated) while the booster thinks everything is fine.
This may never happen if the booster load is never close to the limit ...

You can try it if you get the transformers really cheap.
Regards
Tom

Hi,
I even wonder, in the case there is only one 60173 -along with the CS2-, if it is possible to use S88s both in the blocks powered by the CS and the one powered by the 60173! Difficult to say for there is no electric diagram of the CS2!
Anyway, I'd follow Tom's advice and try the exchange to 60174.

Fred

Thanks Tom & Fred,

In the long run the new layout will be a large "E" (6x6m) and I will be ultimately needing 3 boosters + the CS2. In fact I am planning on a 4th booster to run all the points/K83's etc, so I guess that trying to exchange (if even still possible) the '173's to '174's is the way to go.

Off on a tangent since all the current gear uses 19v DC has anyone tried using SM power bricks for laptops instead of Marklin transformers as here in Australia the 60061/60101 are bloody hard to find and very expensive if you can get them. I could get 4 or 6 laptop bricks of the same rating (19vdc 100w) for the cost of 1 60101.

Regardless of the advice not to use the 100w unit with the CS2 for "HO" since I will be connection 2 x MS2's + 3 x S88's I assume I should be using a 60101 just to cover the power drain of those units and still have enough to still run 4 or 6 locos at a time.

Trusted eBay seller Johnvandamme has both the 60061 and 60101 in stock and ships Worldwide.

The 60101 is the perfect match for your 60215 and will provide 5 Amps of track power.
The price is Euro 64,99, similarly the 60061 is priced at Euro 54,99.

I concur that It would be best to exchange your boosters for the 60174 model.
I think Marklin were doing an exchange program.
Maybe get in contact with Oldtoot trains.

Best Regards
Ashley

Yes, I've used Sony 19.5v DC laptop power supplies with my 60174, and they power the layout fine. The only downside that I found with them was that if you have a short on the layout and the booster / CS protection kicks in, you have to unplug and replug the laptop power supply from the mains supply to get it to work again.

I'm currently using the power supply that came with my ESU 4 amp Ecosboost with the 60174, that recovers from a short ok without having to unplug/replug the power supply.

You should be able to use the converter cable that come with the booster to connect the booster to the power supply - I soldered a female power socket to match the plug on the ESU power supply to the converter cable.

Hi Ashley,

Old age getting the better of me, better late than never.

Just got 2 60101's from him for Euro 69.99, should have done it back then when the $ was I better shape. Just waiting on a reply to see if he has 1 more. Still don't understand why they (local marklin dealers) want 2 and a half or more times the price of the same thing in Europe Cursing

Just have to pull the digit and get a straight answer from my nearest Marklin dealer about the 60173's or maybe just send them myself direct to Marklin Confused

Thanks again everyone for the advice.

Cheers All again,

Got my 3 x 60101's for AU $330 delivered, thanks for putting me onto "Johnvandamme", great prices and no VAT. Only the second EU dealer that has done that. Surprised I have never come across him before as I buy a lot from northern Europe.

PM'ed Old Toot, so see what happens re: the 173's
