Dear Sir,
I have just received new measuring car Marklin#49960 in last week. Km/hr is working normally.
But mobile station can not control this car to change measuring mode such as speed , distance, time. Becase MS1 have no F1,F2,F3F4.
Anyway i trial to use address 75 directly...But this car is still not to work.

I don't sure that this car decorder is broken or MS1 is not suitation for this car.

Please help me...
Thank and Regards,
ThanethM

Hi taneth, it seems that the car is not compatible with a MS1

take a look here

https://www.marklin-user...g=posts&t=5779&=

It is an old thread, dont know if perhaps the problem might have been fixed with a firmware update of the MS1

I confirm: just using an MS1 as your CPU, you will not be able to control the 49960.
I use my MS1 as a walk around controller (i.e; "slave" ) to my ECOs2 .
The 49660 on the Ecos has been entered under the "M14fx" format (it is *not* mentionned in the ECOS database!!) and then it can eventually be controlled via the MS1.
Hope this helps.

To be able go contrl my 49960 with a MS1 connected to my CS1 I gave it certain icons for the functions to be able to use the f1 to f4 buttons (the left ones) on the MS1:

f1= light bulb with no. 1 inside
f2= Acc& braking delay (Almost triangle)
f3 = shunting speed (Turtle)
f4 = flute
screenshot of my CS1:
49960 screenshot

A small warning:
After approx. 40 hours running time I opened my measuring car and found that the rear red bulb had melted some of the plastic holding it
49960 rear LED
I replaced it with a LED

At the same time I installed an old c80 decoder to be able to switch the light on and off with the f0 function.
49960_6080
The purple wire has the same function as the orange one on the more modern decoders (plus for functions)

A future improvement will be to use the f0 function from the c80 decoder to switch the power to the measuring unit on and off via a small relay. This is to prevent that the seven segment LEDs are on all the time

The same for the MS2, the 49960 can't be used with the MS2!
The Decoder does not recognize the commands in MM2 format but only MM1. But the MS2 does only support MM2. Therefore, only the speed is displayed.

Therefore, I'm waiting for a CS2, better to say, I'm waiting for money to buy the CS2.

I found a report about how to replace the original MM1 decoder by a Esu LokPilot fx function decoder (any other function decoder possible):

http://donaupeter.de/moba/Messwagen/messwagen.htm

I'm thinking about doing the same, but either with LokPilot V4.0 Plux (9 function ports) or with two Uhlenbrock function decoders.

Thanks for that Moritz.

This has changed my mind about getting one of these coaches next time I see one for a good price. Been a very long time since I made circuit boards, that will be the challenge Confused Blink

Thanks heaps for the link ThumpUp
Sad when its cheaper to buy a new 29640 starter set from Germany than a CS2 on its own in Oz, welcome to the joys of Marklin down under .

Yesterday, I received a circuit board to connect a new decoder to the 49960:
UserPostedImage

The Zimo MX686 seems to be a good choice, because it has 8 AUX ports and a connectors for a buffer capacitor. This would be enough to realize:

- Headlight front
- rearlights front
- rearlights back
- switch on/off measure board
- Measure function 1
- Measure function 2
- Measure function 3
- Measure function 4

Hi Moritz,

Just curious as to were you got the circuit board from as I could find no indication on the donaupeter site that they sold them ?

Sorry if I missed a bleeding obvious link or page on that site but I'd be happier now days to pay for one as opposed to trying several times to etch a circuit board myself. (And get very cranky with myself for not being to do it anymore)

Look forward to seeing your final results with the modernising of this coach.

Shane

In meantime, Märklin support told me, the MS2 should be able to control the 49960. I replied that it isn't possible because of the decoder does only "spaek" MM1 but the MS2 does only speak MM2 protocol.

Now, they replied they would take their test sample from the board and check it by themselve. I'm waiting for the result of this test run.

A further option I think about is to use the TAMS FD-R extended. Well, this function decoder provides only 6 AUX ports, but on the other sinde, it has 4 integrated sounds like a bell and a horn. Furthermore, it provides 3 input ports, a SUSI interface and direct support for a buffer capacitor!

http://www.tams-online.d...d/produkte_fd_r_ext.html

With this decoder, I would realize:

Functions:
F0: Headlight front
F0: rearlights front
F1: Measure function 1
F2: Measure function 2
F3: Measure function 3
F4: Measure function 4

Sounds:
F5: Bell
F6: Horn
F7: conductor whistle
F8: door closing beep

I would switch of the rear backlights, because they don't make sense, there will allways be a loco on the rear side. So why have backlights there?

A bit sad that it would not be possible to switch on/off measure board. But it would need an additional decoder. Is it worth?

As compromise, I could switch on/off the measure unit together with head/rear lights! This would make it possible to switch off the measure unit when the measure waggon is not in use on a siding but it is always on when the head/rear lights are switched on. This may be a good solution:

Functions:
F0 forward: Headlight front + measure unit ON
F0 backward: Rearlights front + measure unit ON

Hard decision!

There will be another option to switch off the LED segments but continue measuring! I will get this solution soon. It is quite usefull, because You can run the measure train with LED segments switched off but continue the measure. Then, in the main station, You can switch on the LED segments to read the values.

Stay tuned!

Here, this shows the place where I can put the linear servo for the pantograph:

UserPostedImage

Still not decided whether I should use the Tams FD-R Extended or the Zimo MX687W, whch comes with a 5V current output for the servo, but it is 15€ more expensive as the Tams FD-R Extended!

It's weird that Marklin haven't re-released this with an updated decoder. Did it not sell as well as expected the first time around?

I picked mine up brand new in about 2007, it had evidently sat on the shelf for some years! Often been tempted by a 49961 to go with it but as I don't have overhead wiring (and will never have live overhead anyway) I don't see much point, beyond completeness.

Yes, I don't understand, too, why they haven't released again with mfx decoder. The same for the BR701 with its nice functions. But I think, it is to expensive in manufacturing and the price doesn't return the investment.

I will look for the 49961, too, because I plan to set up overhead. But the market price for used 49961 is very high, the same for the 49960. I payed 75, which was not too much for this model.

I think mine was about £110, given that it was brand new (box a little faded but contents untouched) that seemed a fair deal.

49961 is behind a few locos and coaches on my shopping list.

In meantime I replaced the decoder eleltronic with a DCC Uhlenbrock function decoder 76900 for F1-F4.

The rear light is here a bit too bright and it shines through the upper headlight. I dimmed now the rear lights (after this photo shot) and now it looks better.
