Hi folks,

I shall be in Frankfurt next weekend, arriving on Friday evening and departing on Sunday evening.

Do you have any suggestions for what to see and do over the weekend ?

I am planning to take a trip to Darmstadt - Kranichstein for the Sunday - looks to be some interesting stuff there to see, including some of my favourite steam engines. If you have been there, please tell me whether you enjoyed it.

Any other ideas for what to see and do ?

Hi John,

You will enjoy the museum....ThumpUp

There is a train-shop in Darmstadt train-station.....all new items....and if you like you can take a nice diesel triebwagen trip to Michelstadt to my favourite shop....they are open only in the morning on Saturday...I take no resposibilities for the wallet problems. There is also another shop just across from the Main Traibn Station in Frankfurt..... if you are intersted in those I can try to find the full info about them....Smile

Cheers,

mehmet

ps: I hope Mandela is getting better....ThumpUp

Take a ride on the "Ebblewei Express", a sightseeing tour on a historic streetcar through Frankfurt. They will serve you a glass of "apple wine" during the ride. Departure is at the tram stop in front of the central station's maion entrance.

Florian,

What a good idea !
Looks interesting.
And I am sure the Apple Juice is sweet.

I actually wanted to come to Nuremburg for a day, to see the DB Museum.
But it's quite a lot of travelling in one day, from Frankfurt.

An ICE ride from Frankfurt to Nuremberg takes about two hours.

The DB Museum has once been a great technical museum. However, they they’re now focusing too much on political and social aspects of rail history. In fact, the current expositions often lose completely sight of rail history at all. What they present instead is general German history since 1835. Many rail-related items are no longer on display in favour of information boards with texts and photos presenting all that political stuff. However, this is not what an attender of a rail museum does expect. Some time ago, even one of their spokesmen told the local newspaper the DB Museum would now longer define itself as a technical, but rather as a historical exposition now.

They still have a number of historic rolling stock on display, like for example BR 05, a BR 78, an E 52, or the Bavarian King’s saloon train. A part of this is on display in a separate building across the street (Neue Fahrzeughalle). So, if you want to visit the DB Museum, concentrate on the rolling stock, and their extraordinary collection of 1:10 scale models. Another must-have-seen is the great Fleischmann H0 layout on the first floor. It was built by Fleischmann in the 1960s is still operated with classic analog relays (not digital!).

But skip the DB museum’s history departments to attend the Nuremberg toy museum in the old town instead. They have an interesting collection of old tin-plate era trains and a fantastic American layout called “Omaha, Nebraska”. It’s in S scale, with nearly all items being hand-made unique pieces. There are many model train enthusiasts who attend the museum only to see this layout.

Hi all,

Had a fantastic time in Frankfurt !

I spent a great day on Saturday travelling the Frankfurt Transport systems, above ground and below ground. The Hauptbahnhof had lots of activity, trains coming and going, passengers everywhere, staion announcements, sounds of locos. I could have thought they might have modelled it on a Marklin layout !!

Then spent the Sunday at Darmstadt-Kranichstein Eisenbahnmuseum, and that was a lot of fun. Saw some of the original locomotives of the German Railway !
It was really a thrill to see Class 01 and Class 23 and DB103 and others up close, to feel them and touch them !! Wow, absolutely awe-inspiring !
