Layout construction (two-rail though) underway of one of those great John Armstrong layout designs, labelled "Hoboken, Oranges [sic] & Western" (5 x 10 ft.):

For the trackplan - originally published in 1953 - scroll down to the first entry dated January 17, 2011.

This is about my preferred theme, busy urban mainline traffic in a confined space. Based on my experience in the field of small and compact layout construction, I reckon that it could be compressed to 210 x 110 cm in HO scale (allowing for platform tracks with a length of 100 cm in the Hoboken terminal).

Enjoy. :-)

I think I love it???? The theme is fantastic, although I don't quite follow the track plan with all the levels etc... I tried googling it but it seems like there isn't much more info out there.

I agree it could be done tighter, but it makes for a fantastic large layout!

I faced the same challenge, and here is the solution: The PDF "Best of John Armstrong - vol. 2" contains the original article and can immediately be downloaded from Kalmbach Publishing (http://www.kalmbachstore.com). The price is USD 8.95.

Cheers
