Hi all

Large scale at its best, one third fullsize

Finnished a new live steam locomotive recently, First track test was last weekend, a short video on youtube, the link is below the photo, http://www.flickr.com/ph...250473747/in/photostream
She ran very well on its first outing

Hi Hannes,

Beautiful engine.
That is a big engine on 7 1/4.
What gauge was the original?

Kimball

Hannes,

You are an engineering marvle and your workshop, its a gourmet kitchen of goodies.
What does it feel having achieved what most of us only see or dream about it.
I would love to hear a rundown of how this loco proceeded from its starting flag and its final stages.

it looks to me everything is precision work so where can anything go wrong with it on its maiden run ?

My score is 20/10

Hannes,

WOW ! ! ! ! ! what a wonderful accomplishment, do I understand that you built if from scratch?

How about a video of it in operation and tell us something about the location where you operated it.

There are several "live steam" groups here in So Cal, My wife looks at my expression and says NO BOBBY, NO BOBBY, NO BOBBY....

I can dream though.

Hi Robert & others

Yes it was built from scratch, I had some copies of original drawings and access to the real locomotive which has been resored at Sanstone Estates, South Africa. The test took place at a track in Pretoria, South Africa.

A video clip can be viewed at

I will post a link to pictures of its construction later

Hi john & Others

On its maiden nothing mechanical when wrong, the only problem was the whistle, I had tuned it on compressed air but as the viscocity of steam is different I will have to fine tune it on steam.

The construction of some of the parts, from start to finnish can be viewed at ( more than 400 pictures)

http://www.flickr.com/ph.../sets/72157611605711680/

It took more than 5000 hours to make and operates at a working pressure of 5 bar / 75 psi, takes about twenty minutes to raise steam from cold

Great work Hannes.
I work on 42" models, and it definetely takes a lot of skill, not to mention time an expensive machine tools to build somthing like that. Well done.

I agree with John, that it would be very interesting to see a commented build report of one of these beauties, to show us what's involved.

By the way, 75lbs in 20 mins sounds pretty quick. We take 4 hours to get 180lbs on ours when it is still warm from the previous day. Then again, the boiler on it is a bit bigger.

Hannes,

What happen with the front grate, I've noticed the 2 inside ribs have a different bend (original 1:1 photo) then the rest of the 8 ribs.BigGrin

Hi John

The middle two ribs have certainly been modified as you can see from this picture http://www.flickr.com/ph...in/set-72157611605711680
this however has not been a official modification, I was told that a driver that had left about five years ago had been responsible for this modification, to me it looks like a bump which I would call damage. I get the same sort of answers when I enquire about damage to my company vehiclesAngry

The pressure gauge (at 42 seconds in the video) is a labour of love.

Thanks Tony, I should perhaps add that the wokshop is used to earn a living, but is very usefull if one is interested in live steam locomotives in the larger scales, providing all the machining facilities required.

Thanks for the video and flicker links.

I googled Sanstove Estates and they really have quite an operation.

http://www.sandstone-estates.com/

I was looking to see if they had a shop for the sale of some of there goodies.
There was mention of a double DVD package of some train operations.

When I was still in the USAF and based at Travis AFB, California, there was a Colonel who I flew and he was into live steam.
He had a SP Cab Forward engine, an oil burner but I don't know if he built if from scratch or it was a kit.
He would run it at Tilden Park which was in the hills East of Oakland/Berkley California. This was in the late 80s.

They are made from stainless steel, have not burnt one out yet in any of my locomotives, the model tracks are relatively short, about a kilometer or less, so the fire does not get very hot for long, on a light load it will not get very hot at all.
