I never got fond of this model., my choice was and is "SBB Red Arrow".
I don't know how Märklin arrived at adding another 2 axles or making it into a bo-bo railcar.

Ian - great condition. What "era" is this 3085 from? It looks almost new...I am going to guess white box/late 80s based on the condition? This was one of my childhood favourites, I have one that was purchased secondhand back in the 80s, but not in as pristine condition as yours after "surviving" my childhood and pulling some pretty big trains.

Really wonderful.

With a date that early this must be one of the very first 3085s. Mine is from the mid '80s, and came in the Blue/Orange box with a window.

You can tell it's an older version from the valve gear. As the model was improved slowly through the years the valve gear got finer.
