Hi all
Welcome to my layout.
As you know I built a "train room" log cabin in my back garden.
That is now complete and work has started on the layout.
The layout is a T shape, being 4.8m wide and 4.8m long.
The "leg" section of the T is reduced to 3m wide, this is to allow
access to 3 sides of the layout.
Have some photo's of the framework, there is a 600mm shelve that runs along the rear wall for storage(loads of boxes) and a workbench for
repair work and kit building etc under the window.
The lower framework is for the Hidden station.
Ian

Hi Ian,

Exellcent benchwork! Did you build it all yourself?

I like the way you have allowed space to move around on either side of the long side of the T. By the way, as the long side is a bit too broad, can you reach atleast half way across for maintenance purposes?

Cheers,
Ranjit

Hi John,Kimball and Ray
Thanks for the kind words,it's taken me since June to get this far.
Ray,I have a rough plan, station area along the front(double doors),
turntable/service area beside my small workbench, but no layout
drawing plan...to computer illerate for that.
I like to just make it up as I go along.

The framework is designed that once the 18mm plywood is fitted the

Hi Ian,
I am a bit like you, I don't have a computer layout program.
The beautiful thing about C track (and I guess M track), is you can do exactly what you suggest. Just lay it down, try different scenarios, until you get what you want. It is interesting, and works very well in the end.

Your bench work is as good as your cabin building. Very impressive!
I don't know how you plan to access you hidden station but trains in the middle could be hard to reach. Murphy's law says the that the train in the middle track will derail and get stuck.

Hi all
Thanks, the hidden station is just under 3m long and is 2m wide.
The gap I have between top of plywood and lower edge of framework is 250mm so although a bit tight I can reach rite into the middle track
and I have access from all 4 sides. All the points and eventually
contact tracks are easily reached from either end.
Thanks again.

Hi Ian,
What a fantastic train room. Your carpentry skills are very good, just like a pro.
The hidden station track work looks great. Are using C track on the upper level or more M track?
I am in the process of doing up an old shed at the moment. It is almost ready for bench work to begin.
It will not be as impressive as yours, but it will be good to get my trains out of the house in to a train room.
Look forward to more pics of your progress. Thanks for sharing with us.

Hi Brian
My "carpentry skills" are all self taught. The whole framework is put
together using 70mm coach screws so nothing to fancy.

I enjoy having the layout away from the house but do realise it would not be for everyone.

Looks great Ian. As others have said access to the middle might be an issue. Also I hope you don't have any 28cm or longer coaches, because they will catch on the large lanterns you have on those M track points. I went through my layout and replaced all of those with the newer turnouts with small lanterns for that reason.

Hi David
Thanks,I realise the older points have that problem, but I was that keen to get some track down that I had to use all the old points I have. Will replace them as and when they come up on E-bay.
As I have said it's not easy to reach into the 2 middle tracks but it
can be done.
Thanks again.

Hi Ian,

Although I find your mega storage sidings very impressive, I have to agree with others that you will find it hard to reach those middle tracks. With only 25cm of clearance, I think you will struggle to get your fingers even a metre into the space with your face pressed hard against the edge. Think also that you will have other trains on the tracks impeding your access.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but I think you should reconsider your design at this stage, where it is easy to make changes.

What about the transition to the upper level? Have you decided on a ramp or spiral? With the amount of space you have you could start the slope at one end of the storage yard area and use that space to gain height within this area.

However you wish to continue with your layout, have fun doing it!

Impressive work!
I am in the middle of the same exercise which makes it even more impressive to me!
I'll second Ray on the comment on accessibility of the trackc on the hidden yard. Unless you provide for openings from the top (??) this may prove a source of frustration.
I'd be also concerned in accessibility to the track on the upper level, and particularly switches.
I make cut outs under each of my C-track switches, and for the few Ktrack I'll use I want to make sure that if I have to intervene to debug, I won't have to be calling on Spiderman or an octopus to do the job.
I actually limited my hidden yard to 6 tracks to save on horizontal space(3 in each direction) but I made them extra long with passing switches in the middle so I can actually park or call any train, as long as I keep the last segment of the middle one always free 5or park the next departing train there)
I will post the last rev of my layout in the next few days, so You'll be able to see what I mean.

Hi all
After all your concerns I decided to do a double check.
I fitted some joists over and temperary laid on a couple of plywood
boards to duplicate the top level.
I then leaned in and carefully measured the distance I could reach.
I did this from all 4 sides. You were all right!!!. I could not reach
the 3/4 inside tracks.Well done everybody.biggrinbiggrin
My solution is, if you look at the first photo with the track laid in
the rear right hand corner I can shorten the bumper track and cut myself a 550mm diameter hole as an access point.
Should I have a problem this then allows me to reach rite into the middle.Let me know what you think.
Thanks again

If I may interfere in an otherwise completely on-topic topic; the quoted statement is a dangerous one as collections tend to grow... so, eventually, you'll need all of them. wink

To get back on-topic; great progress you're showing and a wonderful starting point for a seriously impressive layout.
