I intend to chronicle the construction of this massive kit on my site, but will post some pictures here as I go along. this will probably take months to complete.

Here are the boxes. The box for the basic kit is HUGE.

And here is the base plate all glued together:

This is going to be fun.

Good luck, Ron.

I took three weeks to build the Faller Boon station.

Look forward to your reports Ron. I_Love_Marklin was asking me about this kit a week or so ago, so I guess he will be interested as well. I know of at least one member of our club who has this kit, and I know he is enlisting some help in building it. Good luck!

I still have to build my Kibri Bonn station, which is bigger than Stephen's Faller kit. I guess I'll get to share some of your pain, but on a slightly smaller scale.

I don't know if it is really pain, David, since I do enjoy building these kits. This one says it will take an average person 80 hours to construct it. I don't plan to log my hours, but at 1-2 hous a night, that is many days.

Ron I use the word pain in a good sense, in that I'm aware that this kit has many 1000's of parts, and takes quite some time to assemble (hence my advice to Alex - I_Love_Marklin - to think twice before committing himself to it).

I guess by the term 'pain' I mean having to be very patient, careful and methodical.

But I'm sure the end result will be worth it.

It took me a week to complete my Bonn station. I enjoyed every minute of it except trying to join the 5 sections together.
The Dammtor looks like a great project. But the kit + the extension seems to cost around 375 Euros + shipping to the US. Too steep for me and no space on my layout for such a large structure. Maybe someday...
Keep us posted with pictures Ron.

Yes, it is rather expensive, but I really wanted it. I am designing my layout extension around this station and have been looking forward to assembling it. I will keep you posted on my progress. Right now I have a number of other commitments keeping me from working on it, but I expect to do some work on it this evening. Goofy: I generally don't weather my kits. It is not something that really interests me, plus with this kit being so expensive, I would not want to take the chance of ruining it.

Interesting comment on Bonn station about joining the five parts together. This is a problem for many folk and does require a bit of work with a file etc to get it looking right. If all five parts were built exactly then I expect it would be OK but with most buildings the walls do not always align as they should and with five parts it does not take much to cause a problem. Kibri's version of Bonn is built on one base and does not have this problem but is not as good as the Faller version in my opinion.
If I was to build Dammtor I would need a new layout as my present one would not have room.
Great project though.

My brother bought this and put it together. It took him quiet some nights to glue it all together. Some parts didn't really fit that well but he had some tricks to make it all work out. The station now looks amazing.

here is a link to a project using the Dammtor kit on a Dutch railway model that may be of interest to you (if you haven't seen it already).

http://www.hetgroterdamp...limit=1&limitstart=0

and here's a site in which another guy apparently used a Dammto kit as the basis for a PRR station - John Black may like this guy's layout.

http://prrnortheastcorri...NORTHEASTCORRIDORHO.html

from what I have seen in photos of your existing station scenes, your Dammtor station should turn out great.

I bought one of these with the extensions a few years ago on ebay for a decent price - hopefully after many other home projects are complete I can build a layout.

Jon: That is one ambitious layout of my home town (Philadelphia)!

Back to my project, last night I got the end walls and the support structure for the station level done.:

A tip for anyone who desires to build this kit...IN SPITE OF WHAT THE INSTRUCTION IMPLY, DO NOT INSTALL THE END WALL INNER WALLS (parts number 30 and 77) until AFTER you lay in the station floor! It is very difficult to get it all together if you put the inner walls in first.

Got one of the nain entryways done. This is moving slowly but I am taking my time.

UserPostedImage

The detail is very nice on this kit:

UserPostedImage

One problem I found is that the station is so long, any curvature at all on the table affects the way it fits. The table I am using has a slight curvature and I had to put a couple of very straight boards under it to make everything fit right.

Ron: Since this is so big and sensitive to a level foundation, have you thought about how you will safely move it? You probably have to move it at least once? If you are permanently going to mount it to the 3/4" plywood, then I guess that is the answer.--MM

My brother made this station too some time ago.
He is very experienced at making this sort of thing (he made two amazing pirate boats). He had some trouble glueing a couple of parts together because ehy didn't fit all that good.
But when it's done, it looks amazing.

Yes. I had to do some disassembly. If you put it together the way the instructions indicate you have some fit problems. I am now doing all the exterior walls then will fit the interior features later. Haven't done much lately, had other priorities. Maybe have some pictures in a few days.

Just a quick update: Here is the current status of the project. As I said, I have been busy on other things for several weeks, but can now get back to this. I had to remove the station floor, one end of the structure, and some of the floor support ribbing to get the walls to fit. After I have don the exterior, I will then reconstruct the floor. I also had to cut a piece f 3/4 inch plywood to support the station and keep it from sagging.

I have a request. The ground floor commercial spaces have no interior structure nor decoration. Can anyone supply me with 9or point me toward) some suitable 1:87 shop/office interiors I could print on heavy stock paper and cut/fold to fit?

I have wasted over a month playing around with creating shops for the downstairs of this station. I finally got the flower shop insert done to my satisfaction, but when I put it in it was basically unviewable through the windows. What a disappointment! I have now restarted work on the station by relaying the floor for the track level. Maybe I will finish it by Thanksgiving. I have all the pieces I need now for my over platform lights (will show that when I get to it...I think it is a neat idea) and for my catenary.

UserPostedImage

All is not lost, however. I am gong to try my hand at scratch building a structure around the flower shop insert I did.

Finally back working on it. Here is it's present state:

I decided that I did not like the paper cutout station clocks, so I bought two lighted Model Power street clocks and am putting them on the station. This picture shows the lit clock but the hands and numbers are washed out in the picture.

Unfortunately I amg going to have to move it to the basement this week to start decorating for Christmas. I do ave room to work on it down there, but with all the activities we have planned I may not get much more done until January. I do hope to finish the "brick" work tonight and I want to see if my concept of installing catenary will work before i put it away.

After a break in working on the station due to Christmas, I am back on it now. I have (just about) finished one end wall:

UserPostedImage

After much thought about how to incorporate the catenary in the station, I decided on this solution. I drilled a #63 hole (.037 inch or .94mm) in the roof supports and ran a support wire through it. I attached the Viessmann catenary hangars but cut off the upper parts since I am only going to have a single wire without the messenger wire running through the station. I think it will work out well.

When I look at the width of the span of the support wire, I must admit, that my inner feeling about forces, tell me, that the support wire will bend from the weight of the catenary, messenger wire or not. I would consider using some kind of center support or attach the support wire to the roof.

Preferably one wire attached to the roof over each catenary.

It is no wider than the 4 track spans I have on my Bonn Station and they do not sag. I think it will be fine. Of course the normal 4 track span nas two hanger wires plus the elastic band to help hold it up. I have hung the first set of wires and it seems to be OK.

Sounds like a job for Juhan's guitar string wire!

Good progress Ron, thanks for the update.

If it works, that will be okay. I would just consider that the support wire will have to support both the weight of the catenary between the two support wires and, at both ends, half the weight of the catenary from the support wire to the first mast. Depending on the wire used for catenary, that can be a heavy load.

Anyway if something starts to bend, there is always the guitar wire. wink

I really like your work with the station. Have you considered to weather the station? Smile

I have not gotten into weathering as a practice. This statio was way too expensive to try it on.

And I thought the Kibri "Bonn" station was huge in the late 90:s... This is awesome... How many tracks in parallel?

What are the measurements? I am especially interested in the inside track area width and the length & height of the station building itself at track level + total height... Total length & width would be appreciated too... Smile

Just wondering if I could squeeze one into my future plans...

Juhan. It is a four track station. (see the pix at http://www.qype.co.uk/pl...rbahnhof-Hamburg/photos)

The overall station is 132cm long, 51 cm wide and 30.5 cm high

The platform area is 37 cm wide and is 7.6 cm above the ground plane. The track placement is two in the center, on each on the sides, with two platforms each servicing two tracks.

Added: Those length measurements are with the expansion kit. I don't know what the length without it is offhand.

Here is my expansion plan that will incorporate the station. You can see the station in the middle of the picture.

Update time. I have finished the roof structure. The roof panels (except the center) just slide on so you can get access to the station.

UserPostedImage

My next project is to build lights for it. I am constructing six light assemblies (three for each platform) each using three Viessmann 63652 LED Bahnsteigleuchte assembled on a Plastruct 90043 channel. I drilled a small hole in the channel and passed the wires through (after cutting off the resistor and diode).

UserPostedImage

Then I soldered the three lights in series. I then pulled the feed wires at the end of the strings through another channel and glued that one on the back of the other to create a closed structure.

UserPostedImage

After installed in the station, I will add one diode and one 1k resistor to each light assembly. Should provide sufficient lighting.
