Does anyone have opinions on the preferred 45mm track brands?

I've heard the LGB holds up better outdoors, and I have a local source for it. I didn't really like the non-scale appearance of it however. Are there better choices?

I have all LGB track on my outdoor garden railway, and while its a bit out of scale, durablity is paramount when its outdoors in the weather. Once ballested and it weathers to a nice brown from the shiny brass, it looks just fine IMHO. Keep in mind thier track is designed after heavy duty meter gauge track such as used on the HSB network in the Harz Mountains. Mike

Cool

As for tracks, I prefer the standard Marklin or Peco. Peco has a life-long guarantee even when used outdoors

I once had a topic about it here; but it looks like it's gone now.

Peco can be a bit hard to lay, since it's not just plug-and-play like Marklin and LGB.

A few pictures from my first garden-railroad-attempt:

Per.

Cool

I have PECO in my outdoor layout for about 2 years now. I like it. When I decided to go for PECO I checked the prices and for me it turned out to be cheaper than Marklin. Also I was living in the UK and it was easy to source it. UK people also like Tenmille because it models the typical UK fastenings.

It was easy for me to lay the tracks, no problem at all. PECO models UK Pandrol Fastclip fasteners which is close to continental SKL fastener. But I don't care about the look that much.

PECO is way simple: there is a 1 yard long flexi track and 10 foot radius (31xx mm) electrofrog turnouts. You buy the fishplates separate. There is also insulated fishplates for the PECO G track which is a bit too big for scale 1 but works fine. The only other accessory you need are the micro switches to wire the frog.

I had LGB, PIKO, various US models on my track and they all handle PECO fine. The only issue are the turnouts where the imitation of the bolts are too high for the these models (deep flange). So I just taken a knife and sheared them off.

And if you are interested in the PECO catalog, this is the scale 1 pages from the catalog:

And the G scale pages:

PECO and Marklin both use code 200 track, but PECO is bullhead track which means that the feet of the track is much narrower. The Marklin track does not go into the PECO fishplate, and the PECO track is loose in the Marklin fishplate. But in a permanent setting you can use both and solder them together.

The end of the PECO track is not tapered, therefore you can make really smooth running track.

If you have more questions just ask. Or I can do a short video for you if you prefer that.
