I know it isn't M, but it can run on 1 gauge M track, and I plan to run it with my CS2.

This is my first Gauge 1 locomotive (or any item for that matter). This is from the KM1 Classic (i.e. "budget") series of 1 gauge locomotives. These are still available a few places with street prices in and around 2,000 euro.

After a unusually long journey from Germany (it sat in German customs for a week, and then Canadian for another -- however no one ever opened the package), a huge box finally arrived today.

Inside that, another box, and within that, another box yet. This thing is much heavier than I anticipated. The shipment was around 25kg

Inside the box are a selection of accessories. Two styrofoam covers are held onto the tender and locomotive via some velcro straps. It's all re-usuable and serves as a secure way to store the setup.

Among the accessories are a bag of tools, a small bottle of smoke fluid (enough for one filling), a pipette, a pair of handling gloves (size 9 -- way too small for my hands ;)), and a manual (Germany only) for the locomotive and a ESU manual for the decoder.

The tender and the locomotive are held onto the wooden bases by a pair of machine screws each. Unfortunately, one of the screws ripped free of the locomotive itself. A quick look and I haven't noticed any damage with it being loose in the box. The wood actually looks quick good as a quick display base.

The tender has the coal bed wrapped in its own plastic bag. Some of the (real) coal pieces are expectantly loose and this contains them.

Inside of the tender you will find the ESU 4.0 XL decoder as well as a massive speaker. Under one of the water filling holes on the tender, you will find a small switch that allows you to disable the motor on the locomotive for static testing/displaying.

Behind the smokebox door on the locomotive, you'll find a second switch that allows you to disable the smoke system. The door on the smoke box is actually held shut by the 6 small latches around the perimeter.

I haven't ventured further than this to set this locomotive up yet and will continue to update this thread as I do so.

Maybe that's why mine has been shown in the postage tracking with status "The international shipment has been processed in the export parcel center / Next step: The international shipment is being prepared for forwarding to the destination country" since nearly 2 weeks ago! Cursing ThumbDown

Yes, I've heard that this can happen and has been a bit of a worry in the back of my mind. One of my fellow Marklin club members has had this happen with a Marklin G1 loco, and with either a Kiss or KM1 loco.

Thanks for posting the pictures Tulit, the loco looks great (you can get the pictures to display directly in the forum if you compress them down in size and re upload them).

For those of you who want to see one of these locos in action, here's a couple of Youtube videos.

BTW, Tulit has got the BR 01 182 Era III variant, mine is the BR 01 180 Era V Museum Loco variant, but otherwise look the same.

:(. Not sure what's going on! I've never had shipments get stuck in customs for me before this. The box was huge (bigger / heavier ) than anticipated so maybe that's why they are getting more scrutiny. The weird thing is neither customs offices opened the box....

Had a chance to fire it up quickly and test out all the basic functions. So far everything seems to be functional.

The coupling of the tender and locomotive was a bit of a pain. The end-plate rotates slightly, but not enough to get the small bracket on the tender to fit into the slot of the locomotive. I had to push a bit harder than I was comfortable with but finally got it to go in.

Finding 1 Gauge track where I live is harder than I thought as well. I ended up with some pieces of straight Lionel G scale I found on clearance for $2 a piece. It works well enough -- though the gauge is a bit too wide. I'll need to order some proper track.

The smoke system is great. Generates a tonne of smoke -- I really need to find a better room to operate it in as my train room isn't that well ventilated. The pump motor on the cylinder steam is a bit loud. It isn't as noticeable with the locomotive sounds on, but definitely really noticeable on video. The overall effect is great is though.

The smoke and chuffs is synchronized well with the wheel. Some people had problems with this because of bad alignment of the hall sensor with the axle magnets. Luckily mine didn't need to be adjusted.

Nice video, thanks for posting Tulit. You definitely need more G1 track!

There's one thing you can confirm for me please, I was told that the loco includes Marklin clutch couplers for use with Marklin rolling stock, is this correct?

Thanks for posting Tulit. However, that looks nothing like a Marklin G1 coupling!

I've just checked a Marklin coupler on one of my G1 boxcars, and while the KM1 coupler is very different to the Marklin, the pocket the coupler fits into (the left hand part of your photo) appears to be exactly the same. Therefore, I think I should be able to take one of the couplers off one of the boxcars (that boxcar will always have to be at the end of a train) and fit it to the KM1 locomotive.

Here's hoping!

I sent an email to the dealer I brought my loco from regarding the fact that the parcel hadn't moved for 2 weeks as of today. I don't know if he contacted DHL or not (I haven't had confirmation back), but I see from the DHL tracking info that the loco is now on its way to New Zealand. ThumpUp

My KM1 BR01 180 finally showed up this week, after sitting in NZ Customs for nearly 2 weeks (so much for their new customs clearance payments methods, it's much slower than the previous method!). I have had this KM1 BR01 1 Gauge loco on order since September last year, and it finally showed up this week. This loco is the reason why I have held off buying too much stuff this year, given the not unsubstantial cost of it. I think it was worth the wait though.

As I suspected from Tulit's photo of the KM1 coupler, I was able to remove a Marklin coupler from one of my freight cars and fit it to the tender of the KM1 loco - rather important if I want to be able to pull my Marklin coaches with this loco!

Thanks for posting these comparison photos of H0 and 1 gauge BR 01's and the video. It is a giant like the prototype! Smoke and steam looks great and real ThumpUp .

It must feel good when you have not bought that much other items and then bought instead this high quality big steam locomotive. I think this KM1 BR 01 is well worth the money spent!

Cheers,
Janne
Märklin H0 digital layout. I have analog and digital H0 Collection. Rolling stock mostly from era I, II, III and IV. Märklin 1 gauge beginner.

Peter Clapcott sent me an email with a link to the cover page of the latest edition of the New Zealand Association of Model Railway Clubs journal, 'The Coupler'.

It has a picture of my KM1 Br01 on the front cover. I can see I'll have to find a copy of it to purchase!

Way to go David, your almost famous BigGrin. Well your BR01 at any rate.
Sad when its cheaper to buy a new 29640 starter set from Germany than a CS2 on its own in Oz, welcome to the joys of Marklin down under .
