Hey all

I have an very old marklin ho set. My Dad started collecting from the late 1950 and then in 1975 when he finally went to germany he got a huge amount. It wasn't until 1980 that he started buying the HO catenary system. In fact my Christmas gift in 1999 was a crocodile electric loco along with a large no of catenary masts, wires and accessories. However when i went to Germany in February this year i noticed that marklin no longer makes the style of catenary i have. Reading from the net i now realize that they have modified the catenary system. My question is this "Is marklin's old and new catenary system compatible or not???

It is sad :( to see that the new C track is not compatible with the old M-track. You have to use the converter section. It is really sad because now i cant expand my track collection.

Sounds like you are expanding or building a lager layout. If you want to expand your M track collection there is plenty on eBay and at lest cost then C track. Many people seem to use the overhead wire for decoration then operational purposes now that digital is here and use other manufacturers for more realistic looks and better operation - Fred

What a German gent did:

Cut a piece of C track into half and removed the connectors on one side of a short M track piece. Then tilted both tracks to be able to push them together with the railheads at the same height, applied hot glue and underneath and created electrical connections by soldering cables as needed.

Hey thanks for the suggestion of buying on ebay. However, regarding catenary is the old and new marklin catenary compatible?

No.

However, there are German blog entries claiming that Hobbex HO catenary is compatible with the old Maerklin HO catenary.

German product info (with drawings):

One German shop offering Hobbex products ("Probepackung" = trial pack):

German eBay offerings (make sure to the select the correct gauge, i.e. HO):

It depends on what you mean by compatible between old and new style catenary. I use both on my layout and generally keep the old style in the background and the new more realistic looking new style in the foreground. Viessmann makes a crossover section that has loops on one end that fit the old style masts and the hooks on the other end that clip over the new style masts. If you have the Viessmann catenary pliers you can make your own from the catenary sections that are not formed at either end.

Electrotren (Hornby Spain) makes catenary that is compatible with the original Maerklin design.
