Hi there, its me

bought a couple of HAG locos (for the first time) and I must say I'm impressed, although the latest purchase hasn't been driven, the loco inside is the same as my other BLS Re 4/4 which I have converted to digital and add an ESU decoder, both locos will eventually have a sound decoder V4 and this, hopefully will quieten down the motor under load or going uphill.

the loco has 4 rubber tyres and they are powered via cogwheels in a heavy metal casing which adds to the weight of the loco as well. everything you look at is well made and all parts are sturdy and except the window inserts is made of metal

Catalogue Number: 211
Roadnumber: 11103
Pantograph: 1
lever for Overhead or track connection

length: 180mm
weight: around 565 g
no problem with driving characteristics
under heavy load and higher speed the motor appears to be a bit noisy

pulling power: excellent
2 coupling hook = they will be replaced with coupling shafts.

Price: both locos A$ 340.00, I think this is a one off and what I call a bargain.

Re 4/4II 11101-11106 (prototype) and 11107-11155 (1st series) were equipped with only one pantograph. I don't know what the specific thinking at the time was, but the concept also appears on the BLS Ae 4/4 (after modifications) and the Re 4/4.

A few of the locomotives had a single arm pantograph, but most of them had a SBB standard BBC scissors style pantograph.

11109: Single Arm Panto: http://www.railfaneurope...press/11109_sargans1.jpg
11113: Normal Panto: http://www.railfaneurope.../11107-11119/re442_8.jpg
Note: 11113 was repainted in 1972/73 in the Swiss Express livery and received modified couplers and crest. The locomotive was repainted red in the 1980s before being destroyed in a collision in Oerlikon a decade ago.

An interesting side note is the former SOB Re 4/4 41, which was delivered to the Sudostbahn in 1967. The locomotive was built as 1115X but was sold to the SOB and given the number 41. In 1996, the locomotive was transferred back to the SBB in exchange for the final one of the four Re 4/4IV (Re 440) that went to the SOB in exchange for their four Re 4/4II (41 and 42-44). 11350 stands out alongside the other SBB Re 4/4II with it's rectangular buffers.

Hag made models of the first series of Re 4/4II starting in the 1960s. Lima also had a model of this series. Fleischmann, Jouef, Hag and Maerklin all made models of the more recent version with two pantographs. Roco is the latest manufacturer to make models of the Re 4/4II and has models of both the first series and the later versions.

The appropriate coaches for the Swiss Express Lok were manufactured by Liliput. the original 88450-88750 included the first class with baggage, first class, restaurant and second class coaches. The models included a feature that made the cars bank in curves. Unlike the Liliput models, the real coaches had the banking system disactivated. The later Liliput-Bachmann models are more detailed and represent the coaches as they existed after the Swiss Express was converted to push-pull operation.

I always found that these locos looked very smart when pulling the orange and white Eurofima coaches too.

Hi Mike,

Very nice loco! On the second picture it looks like the window to the right is broken, is this some sort of divider that is not captured in the image or just a lighting phenomenon?

this is a light reflection, HAG, I assume rectified the window inserts because my BLS Re 4/4 doesn't look right, the insert comes in one piece and covers the side window as well but the front window goes beyond the angle of the mold of the loco housing.

I'm surprised they've delivered it like this

Your eyesight is remarkable! ThumpUp

We do not mean exactly the same thing in the picture, but actually, on the early ("old generation") Re 4/4 II models like the "Swiss Express" unit shown above, HAG used the same technique as Marklin still does up to this day on their Ae 6/6. The divider between the front windows and the curved edge windows is not a molded part of the metal body but rather a colored part of the transparent window insert!

Stefan,

I noticed this when I took the loco apart but there has been another revelation, to get the top light working they had to get a light reflector up the middle, this is ok with other Re 4/4's with 2 windows only, it can hide behind the middle support but since I've added led's I removed the light reflector.

any thoughts on the design fault regarding the BLS Re 4/4 ?

You might be able to separate the front window insert from the side window, file off some of the "glass" and then press the front part inwards so that it no longer protudes on one side.

mh, since I've added led's to the front and rear (3) and forming the wires out of sight to get to the window insert is more or less impossible + the left window size looks like its to narrow anyway, so it has to stay as it is but the next one I will search if there is another option, Stefan, thanks for your help

John

Thank you for the reply regarding the light and windshield. It has now become "clearer" to me. Smile
