Don't miss SIX locomotives in full steam at next week's Thirlmere Festival of Steam!

The Thirlmere Festival of Steam takes place in just over a week on Saturday 28 February - Monday 1 March. The event is NSW's largest gathering of operating steam locomotives.

This year's line up of steam locomotives include:

6029 - a gigantic 260 tonne Garratt locomotive, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, in steam and back on the tracks for the first time in over 30 years!
3237 - 'Lachlan' from the Lachlan Valley Railway.
3016 - from Canberra Railway Museum.
3642 - a legend of steam from Trainworks.
3265 - 'Hunter' from the Powerhouse Museum.
2705 - a Trainworks regular favourite.

Those of you, who read my posts will remember that FD, Miss 15 (she was 12 or 13 at the time) and I went here about three years ago.. It is a fantastic site with lots of very interesting NSW stock.

The blurb from them also says that they have:
  • rides in vintage buses

  • Market stalls for FD's that are not too keen on trains

  • Night photography workshop - you can photograph their locos at night for practice.

  • Sheffield trike demonstrations (Google this one)

  • Vintage cars display

Anyway you get the picture. If you don't then there is the website, which is full of pictures at http://www.thirlmerefestivalofsteam.com

Hi all,how far is Thirlmere from Sydney.I ask because I have a niece who has moved to Sydney
with her husband and two kids who loved our our outings to the model steam train club when
they were here.I know they would love the festival if it was not too far from Sydney and could
be a day trip.I will inform them anyway so thanks for heads up.
Best wishes
Jay

It's about a 2 hour drive from Sydney. There is also a train service to the nearby Tahmoor station. My guess is that they will run a shuttle service on the day.
