This may seem trivial to everyone.

I'm interested in getting the Starter Set. The descriptions said it includes a 230 volt / 36 VA switched mode power pack. I live in the US and we have 110V/60 Hz. Do I need to:

1) Replace the power pack with 66365 for 120V/60 Hz, or
2) Get a transformer to convert 110V to 230V to use the power pack

Thank you.

No real need for either one, the 66361 switched mode power supply included with the 29710 set works fine with 120 Volt 60Hz input, you just need a simple plug adapter for the Euro plug to fit in the N. American style outlet.

I bought a 120/240 step up/ step down transformer initially to use with my CS2 and MS2 switched mode power supplies but found that it makes no difference, the power output is the same 18-19 Volts DC with or without using the transformer on both the 66361 and 60061ThumpUp.

This is one of the advantages of switched mode power supplies, properly designed modern ones will accept a wide input voltage range without any adjustment by the user. You will find the same is true for laptop supplies and chargers for other portable devices.

Thank you for the replies. This is the confusing part. If the Switched Mode Power Pack 66361 (230V) works with 110V, why have another one, 66365, for 120V?Confused

The descriptions for both are almost identical:

66361 36 VA Switched Mode Power Pack, 230 Volts

66365 30 VA Switched Mode Power Pack, 120 Volts

It probably has something to do with our regulations for electric toys, their suitability for children (8+) and need for UL / FCC certification.

I can see at least two reasons: it is a wall wart, but requires different plugs for US and Europe. Using a plug adapter is not the best idea if you really use it at the wall.
The 66365 for USA is marked "Made in China", the 66361 has no "Made in ..." - I bet they come from the same factory.

Replaceable connectors probably would not be "toy safe". And with different ref. numbers they do not sell stuff marked "Made in China" to their European customers. Märklin are a bit shy about their Asian sources.

It's worse for Japanese Märklin fans as Mother M* doesn't offer anything for 100 V any more.
Regards
Tom
