My sources have this as a set with one green and one red locomotive. Based on the 3050, except that the locomotives will be equipped with mfx and updated lighting.

Overall, I have been very pleased with the Marklin reproductions but I don't understand the logic of packaging both (red and green) locomotives together. In the end, I will probably purchase the set but sell the red locomotive and keep the green one.

Well, I guess it must be a matter of maximizing the ASP (average selling price) for marklin.
On the other hand, the scenario you describe (buying one, selling the other) is perfectly understood and anticipated: this is why they are packed in individual boxes.Wink
I think your friendly dealer will certainly be happy to oblige and do the split for you.
In my case, I just don't know which one to keep...
The really nice thing this year with the repros is that tin plate coaches set to go along with the locos.
I know they are "wrong" dimensionally and in many other aspects BigGrin but this time there is a 1/2 class combi and two second class coaches (the original ones were only 1st class)
Can't resist the nostalgia of the heavy locos pounding on rail joiners, and the metallic noise from the tin plate coaches!Love
Feels at least 40 years younger!! LOL

I'm glad that Marklin are still issuing replicas in the blue box style from the 1960's. Here's hoping they come up with a 30470 one day......

Hi,

The new 30501 set is said to be based on the old 3050, but as a matter of fact it isn't. With the exception of an anniversary edition for Switzerland produced in 1993, the 3050 was sold until 1985, when the mould was slightly modified and the 3350 was released. Here are the photos:

(Source: Mikado Handbuch Märklin 00/H0, 1992, Buch 1, p. 178)

The two locomotives in the 30501 set are obviously based on the mould of the 3350 from the mid-1980s, so they're not a reissue of a vintage model from the 1960s, and they aren't new versions of the 3050. The non-functional red tail light that the 3050 used to have is missing, and the front side looks more like the 3350, except for the silver lines reminiscent of the 3050. The 3350 had plastic windows, which the new 30501 doesn't have because that would really have made it look like a locomotive from the 1980s.

I found this out by accident when I had a close look at the different Märklin models based on the old 3050 or 3350 and compared them to the new 'replica' set.

Best regards,

Mark

P.S. / Edit: I've had a look at the photos of the 30501 that Stephen has posted on this website. The front windows of the 30501, 3350 and 3332 are bigger than those of the old 3050, so the house of the 30501 locomotives is very similar to that of the 3350 or 3332, except for the added silver lines and the missing plastic insets in the windows.

Best regards, Mark

I like Märklin items produced in the 1960s or early '70s, but also digital locos & current rolling stock.

The Chinese say something like "It is more important what people do than what people say". In an ideal world it should be the same. Unfortunately M* is no exception. Sometimes I think they (the management) is not even aware...

Hopefully M* do a lot of great things.

The 30501 mould is not the one of the 3350/3650 (shown left) either, as the silver stripes are moulded, not printed,
and the window profile is slightly different.
