Hello,

I've been waiting a number of years now for Märklin to bring back an ERA III BR 18.4 into production. While looking at the 2015 new items today on the maerklin.com site I noticed model 39030, a BR 18.5. I've never heard of a BR 18.5. According to the site it's a Bavarian S 3/6, just like the BR 18.4's.

Can someone please enlighten me as to the difference between these locomotives?

Thank you,
Rob

Hi Rob,

Here some information:

BR 18.4/BR 18.4-5

BR 18.5/BR 18.6

There are probably many modifications vs. BR 18.4, but one noticeable difference is the cabin front corners shape. In BR 18.4 they are rounded and in BR 18.5 they are not.

Regards,
Janne

Hi Rob,

Even though I think Janne already nailed the answer to your question, it has briefly been discussed before here in the forum: https://www.marklin-user...r-photos.aspx#post474193

Hi Ray, all,

You're spot-on. The BR 18.5 is indeed very similar to the BR 18.4, except for a very visible flat rather than round fronted cab. The BR 18.5 is a so called Series K loco, produced in Era II (so technically, it could be debated whether it is still Bavarian) and having slightly smaller drive wheels compared to the 'original' S3/6 as build around 1912 (?).

And slightly off topic; both machines are stunningly beautiful, IMHO. :)

Cheers,
Sander

Hello Janne, Sander,

Thank you both for your replies. It's always good to learn something new! I too agree that the S3/6's are one of the most beautiful steam loks ever built. Never having been aware of the 18.5's and the 18.6 rebuilds until yesterday, I will now have to do some research to see if I wish to acquire the 39030 or wait a few more years for a modern (a.k.a. Digital) version of my beloved Analog 3318 (Era III BR 18.4).

Bye,
Rob

I agree, though I prefer the .4 version.
Dispite a later Era is more my cup of tea.

PS: My 3082 BR41 that you 'Delta'-ized years ago is still running fine, Sander ;-)

Mosty era III DB.
