39390 is BR39 rather than BR18.5

I'd like to order 39030 and coach set but I am not Insider member. Huh

39030 seems not to replica the inner crank of 3rd and 4rd cylinder as Fleishmann did on BR18.6 when seeing the movie by Marklin official website Mellow

I also ordered the 39390 several years ago (I was an Insider back then).

Why not start a poll about it? With the correct ref. number of the BR 18.5, of course ...

I'm not an Insider, but I would rather order the br56, br58, or br39. The br18.5 is very nice, but very similar to the br18.4, which I have already.

I'm not going to buy any new locos at all. I have only bought some locos in my collection as factory new (37567 black Crocodile and 37862-01 BR 86 and some DB diesels). If I will buy more locos later I will buy like new or new second hand locos like most of my locos are.

You mean 39030? I will not buying because price 449 euro is too expensive.

No, I'm not planning on it. It's too pricey. Soon I'll be having delivered the 37819 BR51. I want to see what else is coming out next year too. Peter Cool

You make a good point, Peter. We're almost at the end of the year, and many of us are now waiting to see what we get in the new items for 2015.

The S2/6 which has been announced recently is another very attractive model, so there are going to be a few demands on my wallet in 2015.

Yes Sir I will! Always do....

I will not order 39030 BR 18.5. Too pricey and I prefer later steam locomotive constructions (BR 01.5 discussed earlier would be ok for me).

As an OT: generally I don't understand how M* intends to recruit new Insider members or hold old ones setting the price around 450 euro for the quite regular-looking steam locomotive. The hobby is shrinking, may be it's better to be more compliant rather than lose everything in the medium term... This is of course applicable not to Insider only, but all models being produced.

Hi Andrey,

While I agree that 450 euro is a lot of money for a locomotive, we are talking about an exclusive insider model, so this is not something the general public would be interested in. There seem to be plenty of customers out there for these high end products, and those who can afford it very often don't even consider something which has been more cheaply made.

I accept that there is a certain minimum price to which a model has to be produced. The more we demand of Marklin in terms of model accuracy, motor quality, decoder quality, number of functions, etc, the more the model will cost to produce. How much a customer is willing to spend depends very much on individual circumstances, so my belief is that there should be models for all pockets, from cheap but well made "hobby" locos and wagons to exclusive, high end products for those who can afford them.

I like the business model that Piko has evolved, with three different levels of model standard, "Hobby", "Expert" and "Classic". The Expert range is perfect for my needs, and although Marklin do produce some models to a similar standard the tendancy in the last couple of years has been to fit these models with more "bells and whistles", increasing the price from around 110 euro 2 years ago to about 180 euro this year.

Sorry to continue Off-topic, but I do feel strongly that Marklin needs to cater for all pockets and this includes the wealthy collector as well as the average enthusiast and the newcomer to the hobby.

I've got the 39390 back in 2009 but did not get the 42259 wagon set as they look too similar to other ones I already had at the time.

So many other nice models coming (and ordered!).

Hi Ray,

yes, I understand the issues of exclusiveness, Insider status etc.
I meant that even within that high level model range BR 18.5 for me is not something outstanding, it is not much more detailed and striking than, for example, 37923 BR 41 or 37810 BR 50 "outsiders". Motor and MFX+ decoder also won't be the breakthrough, as I realize... So just another passenger steam locomotive which is not "cheaply" or "expensively" made. Just Insider status as an added value.
However, I already paid annual Insider fee, I'm not happy to pay extra 20 euro for the "Insiderness" of 39030 (regular "outsider" tender steamers like 37923 with MFX+ go for 429 euro).
By the way, production, even for Insider models, moves to Hungary (what should in my oppinion decrease production costs), while prices creep up from year to year.
I'm an average enthusiast. With prices for the new models higher than 400 euro I would skip to buying second hand models from the past years. If many average enthusiasts will do the same it won't be good for Marklin. Just wish success to "plenty" of customers who can afford these high end products at any price Marklin will set for them.

Best regards, Andrey Smile

Hi,
BR 18.5 has driving wheels (187cm) smaller than some BR 18.4 types.
So in that respect it is rather an appealing locomotive, which can be called on to undertake a variety of duties.
I rather like its balanced look, and long tender.

That said, I always purchased Insider locos while I was building up my stud.
But now I am more selective, and I think I would prefer to wait for this loco in an era IIIa paint scheme, and coaches to match.

regards
Kimball

It's an era 3 loco. I have an old 18.4, but that one is off the track. This model has much more details, looks like a very nice model.
I mostly buy an insider steam locomotive and I will order this one too, including the coach set.
Since I already ordered the S 2/6, I need to be very selective with the new items to come.

Production moves to Hungary, wages in Hungary are higher than wages in China.

Since 2009 Märklin's workers in Germany have job guarantees. No firing in Germany since the guarantee was established in 2009 and at least until 2019.

When they opened the new plant in Hungary they said: "Aufwendige Kleinserien wie die exklusiven Insider-Modelle werden sogar vollständig in Deutschland gefertigt."
So not all Insider models (if any) will be made in Hungary, (at least some) Insider models are still completely made in Germany.
Regards
Tom

Well, since it's Era III, it's "too modern" for me, even if I did get the BR58 insider....
But if they do a DRG version, I'll be first in line.... BigGrin

Since I too have the S2/6 on order, it seems like this year will be very restricted for other new items....

Hi webmaster,

Can you correct number 39030 as 39390 is incorrect.

1) I won't buy BR 01.5 at 499 euro.
2) Will consider buying if up to 449 euro since BR 01.5 is higher priority for me than BR 18.5. Need to have a look, then to decide.
