Hi all

Is anybody going to IMA in Cologne this year (November 20th - 23rd)?

I am thinking of going, I have never been there before.

Hi!

With very high probability I will go there, most likely on Saturday.

The Cologne regulars' table will hold a special meeting on that Friday (November 21st) and any MRR fan who happens to be in town will be welcomed to join us. Official language is German, but many will also understand English. With very high probability I will be there.
The meeting can easily be reached from the fair area by streetcars.
Regards
Tom

Amazing that so many from all over the place are coming to Cologne.

Unfortunately I will not be able to attend that weekend as I'll be in the UK by the look of things and I only live approx 20 min away by car from Cologne..... but I can say that I have been to IMA once and I liked it! Lots of people though!

As a side note, Cologne is truly a beautiful city and is the most visited place in Germany. Do pay a visit to the Old Town and don't forget to go and see the Chocolate Museum!

Nice pics PJ.

I have actually been on that Thalys service to Brussels and back. Nice, but too slow (takes 2 hours on train, can drive in 90min!).

I'm not going this year. It's the first Köln show I have missed for very many years, but I have a Märklin related commitment here in the UK that weekend, and I can't do both.

I hope all who go to Köln have a good time, and enjoy the show!

Me and She expect to be at the IMA. Good meeting place is the Insider booth on the Marklin stand at around 11:30 - 11:45, then wander off to one of the lunch places together.

The following weekend the plan is to be in Nantes for a quilt show for her. One takes and one gives ... Laugh

Indeed Cologne (we say Keulen!) is a beautiful city still, truly amazing after the destruction in WW2.
My wife and i attempt to visit the city by ICE from Utrecht every springtime,we have found a nice little hotel close to the central station called Domspitzen, nice people and good breakfast, ask for a room on the backside, frontside is noisy at night.
Within 30 minutes you walk over the bridge (6 railwaylanes!) to the other side, where the IMA is.
An absolute must (A MUST!) is to see the cathedral inside,it will make you silent,no matter what your religion is.
Funny thing about Cologne: no Marklin shops found in the centre, but instead a nice Lego shop in the main shoppingstreet.
For dinner, look for the little streets behind the main shopping street in the centre, good food for little money.
Also worthwile is the ZOO,walking distance along the river.
My tip for the day: buy your trousers and shirts in Cologne,German quality in sizes fit for strong men!
There is a big departmentstore (Kaufhaus ???) in the main shoppingstreet selling nice Dockers trousers and Olymp bussiness shirts.

Greetings Soeren,

Cologne is a nice city, always worth a visit, let alone for the Dom (cathedral).
As for the IMA,i have been there two years ago,and it was not up to my expectations.
Especially there was almost a total lack of a second hand market, which means you are stuck with guys selling brand new Marklin factory stuff.
In my despair,i almost bought a 4415 beer car for beer from Cologne,i did not see that one before.
Even the Marklin factory lay-out did not offer any excitement,a rather dull presentation in my humble opinion.

In that respect,Eurospoor at Utrecht in Holland would have been a better option for you, perhaps next year?
If you go to Utrecht, try the NH hotel at the backside of Utrecht central station, very convenient and the beds and breakfast are great!
Eurospoor is very close to the station.

Cheers,
Paul.

Indeed Cologne is a very beatiful city. There is a lot to see and i agree the ZOO is great to see. So is the botanical garden which is right next door. It looks like i may be able to come to IMA after all, but all depends on work ( and wife)!

Another way to get across is to take a local train from the Hbf to Deutz (where the IMA is held) across the Rhein. Takes only a minute or so but at least one can say i rode a german train! 😄

NewMB:

We tried the train over the bridge but waitingtimes in the weekend are very long,we prefer walking over the bridge to watch the continuous traintraffic over 6 tracks,24/7.
When walking, you have a terrific view over the city and the Dom (cathedral) with the two spikes ( "Domspitzen"),height some 180 mtrs!
Must say the city and the people are in a way similar to the city and people of Rotterdam, perhaps that is why we like it so much there.
Two cities bombed flat in WW2,both located at the same river (Rhine),both having a magnificant cathedral, both having modern architecture, both having a railwaystation with plenty to see,and both having friendly helpful people!
Close to our hotel we ended up in a local pub crowded with local people drinking beer and enjoying a good meal,we had to wait for a table,it was most enjoyable in the end.

One note: we observed a lot of drinking people around the station, also during daytime, men and women alike.
This is something you do not see in Rotterdam.
We have not got any trouble from these people, and the local police are keeping a tight watch, but still it is a bit odd.

Hello,

I found this shop in Köln good and not too far a walk from the Hbf : Spiel + Hobby Karin Koeppen Wittekindstr. 4250937 Köln

Bought some stuff there, including this special Märklin Köln beer car :

Dear PJMarklin,

The red beercar you have shown is the 44204.
Frueh is one of the beerbrands in Cologne,it comes in small glasses of 200 ml,nice!
The text says: In love in Cologne.
On the other side there should be text saying Frueh,Koelsch in voller Fahrt/Frueh,beer from Cologne at full speed.
I know there are others,i suppose for every IMA there will be a special issue.
see also 4711 for the 4711 Koelnisch Wasser/Eau de Cologne.

Paul.

Please do not miss it during your next visit to Cologne!

Inside this cathedral there is no meaning of time, there is a sense of eternal piece, and a taste of the limitless universe!

But there is SO much to see also outside of Cologne....

RWE Hole, about 750m deep (coal digging). Close to Aachen.
UserPostedImage

Mosel, about 40min drive south of Cologne.
UserPostedImage

Schloss Charlottenburg in Bruhl (just south of Cologne).
UserPostedImage

Schloss Gracht in Liblar (a stonethrow away from where I live), about 20km southwest of Cologne.
UserPostedImage

Again, Schloss Gracht.
UserPostedImage

Or why not visit the Japanese Gardens in Leverkusen?
UserPostedImage

Anyway, happy to post more if anyone are interested.
