Yaasan, the above image is basically the plan I'm following, it's taken from a track planning book I've had since I was a kid. I will be closely following the plan where turnouts will go, however the straightaways on the 6 straight station tracks and on the loop will be approximately twice the length than what is in the plan, in order words it will be just extended lengthwise. I have a few trains which have 7 or 8 cars plus the locomotive, and in order to run them i needed the longer station straightaways as well as loop straightaways.

Please note that the above layout is in M-Track, I may try to substitute in K-track flex track for some straightaways on the loop.

Hi Manhattan,

Thank you for attaching your rail diagram. Very big! 60113 may not provide enough power in this diagram.

I don't know how to use external booster(60174) in case of applying to 60113.
Does anyone know how to use?

Best regards,

Hi all,

I have just released Desktop Station 0.91e.

- CV
I add CV read and write features. I also add a support function for DCC long address (CV29, CV17, CV18).
You can easily register new DCC address.
UserPostedImage

- Assign an application to locomotive function button.
In case of you assign sound player, you can play a MP3 file when you click function buttons.
You don't need expensive sound decoders! Many german and japanese sound files are provided on my web site for free. Sound player is including in the Desktop Station.

Hello Yaasan,
I've been following this now and then and finally got the hardware put together and software installed with my fellow forum member r.coons. Thanks a lot, Desktop Station is awesome!

I've been getting familiar with the functionality for a couple of nights. I got a mfx loco registered right away and been running all three protocols simultaneously.
Shunting with Esu decoders in DCC mode is so much smoother with the double amount of speed steps.

I've had problems though with the accessory panel. It jams easy and needs frequent resetting. Only on or two magnet articles work behind k83 decoders. The other icons get sticky and won't animate the function. If I reset the CAN-BUS shield the communication starts and few commands in the buffer gets relayed to the track. Is it just me or a known issue?

BTW, how do I get the big throttle you have in some pictures working with it ?

Thanks again,
Juha

Hi Juha,

Thank you for using my software. I'm happy to hear your post.

Desktop Station 0.81L has a bug which Accessory direction is reverse. Please try latest version 0.81M which I have just updated today.

I have some throttles. Which is you wanted?

1. Densha-de-go throttle.
UserPostedImage

This throttle is currently sold in Japan. You can get used one in the stores. The price may be about 40 USD excluding shipping fee. You need converter device as ELECOM JC-PS201U.

2. Tomix 101 cab controller
UserPostedImage

This throttle can't connect to 60113 and CAN-BUS shield via PC.
However, my original hardware which is DSmain supports this throttle. See my hardware page.
DSmain is a gateway hardware based on Arduino. You can use instead of marklin's 60113 and Arduino UNO, CAN-BUS shield. DSmain doesn't support mfx mode but mfx locomotives have MM2 mode. DSmain can control many marklin's and DCC locomotives!

Best regards,
Yaasan

Thanks Yaasan for the quick response!
I installed the 0.91M release right away and tested it for one night. Sorry to say the problem with unresponsive accessories is still there. Now just a pair of different switches work for a few clicks and the die.

To me the 0.91L release was better. In the newer one initializing the COM port is tricky. First it times out forever, but when I hit the STOP button, the port comes up. Desktop Station is then stopped and needs to be STARTed.

- Is the Desktop Station picky about it's installation directory? I unzipped both releases in C:\Users\Public\Arduino\ which lets me to run temp separately.

- The other question I have is about moving settings between installations. This below is from your FAQ page:

Q11. How to move settings on the old environment.

Backup the followings. These files are in the Desktop Station folder.

Default.map
LocDB.dat
S88Events.cfg
settings.xml

Copy the backuped files to new desktop station folder.

When I unzipped the package, my settings were in: C:\Users\Public\Arduino\DesktopStation_091l\bin
I moved the to the bin directory of the 091M release, but none of the locos were restored to the new release.

Did I mess up something?
Thanks again,
Juha

Hello Brakeman,

Sorry, I found bugs. The bug disturbs com port communication.
Please download 0.91M again. The uploaded file is replaced as improved version.

http://yaasan.mints.ne.j.../DesktopStation_091m.ZIP

The configration files are stored in ./config folder.
Please copy the config folder to new Desktop Station's folder.

Best regards,
Yaasan

Thanks for lightning fast reply!

Tried out the new release today.
Now the COM port initialization works like in the previous releases, no trouble there.
Also transfering configs was no problem.

Same problems with accessories, different addresses again working than in previous ones.
How about you other users out there, do you have similar problems with switches and signals?

I won't be able to test the Desktop Station now for a couple of weeks, no rush.

Juha

Hi Manos,

If you have 60113, yes but you need CAN cable between 60113 and CAN-BUS Shield like the below.

UserPostedImage

If you can't collect the parts of CAN cable, I can sell you this Cable. However, I'm distributing some commanda station hardwares instead of the cable. I recommend you to use these hardwares. Some European users are using this hardware. See the following video.

The first for addresses 1-4 is Marklin k83 and two for addresses 5-12 are Viessman 5211. They all work with 6021 and keyboard.

Thanks,

Hello Yaasan,
I'm getting back to the accessory control problem I have.
Just installed the ver 0.92 for Desktop Station and tried out the functions.

Sorry to say, but I still have the same trouble.
- The accessories work first fine if operated from the bottom of the Cab panel.
- When I switch to the Accessories panel, random accessories work. This time 1, 6, 7 and 8 were dead.
- Going back to Cab panel, and some accessories are dead there too.
- switching to Accessories panel and different set of accessories are dead.

Closing Desktop Station and resetting Sparkfun CAN-shiled is needed to get back to the beginning.

Any help is highly appreciated,
Juha

Hi,

I just wanted to report that I got Desktop Station working on a HP Stream 7 tablet.
There are more and more cheap tablets running full Windows 8.

Having a touch screen (a little small though) makes the control very intuitive and that makes a great upgrade from the mobile station.
My son loves it.

Thanks Yaasan!

A quick update here,
Yaasan studied the problem right away and analyzed my settings files. Also sent him a video how my interface works. No real bugs found, but I was popping the switches back and forth too fast. The Can Bus shield was behind the commands. Still unexplained weird behavior with inactivity in Accessory panel. Better operate them in the Cab subpanel.

He has already implemented some improvement ideas like user defined icons and inactive accessory slots, so if you haven't upgraded yours lately, do it now.

Thanks,
Juha

I use an OTG USB cable to connect to Arduino.
Then the Arduino is loaded with Railuino libraries and connected from the CAN bus with the MiniDin cable.
Now, it would be great to have bluetooth support...

Hi Phillipe, Brakeman,

Thank you for reporting.
I'm developing some original hardware instead of marklin's. It's more easier to control for your son.

If you have a question or proposal, please send me in detail.

Hi all,

I have developed Ethernet support for DCC/MM2 Shield.
My friend reviews intel's Galileo Gen2 with my hardware which is DCC/MM2 Shield. Intel's Galileo Gen2 is similar product with Arduino UNO.
He is using Tablet PC with wifi. Galileo Gen2 connects to Ethernet hub or wifi station.

Desktop Station supports control commands over TCP/IP. Then Desktop Station can control model railway without any wires!

Detail describes in this page.

Hello Yaasan, and hello all.
It's some quite time that I'm following this forum, and I finally decided to register and write.

First of all congratulations for this big piece of software.Having the possibility to overcome the price of the CS2 is really good.

Does anyone know how to use?

If the problem is just the booster, there is a workaround.

Let me explain. As you know the 60113 translate the digital commands coming from the CAN bus into "rail signals", and send them on the tracks. The booster is just repeating these signals into other parts of the layout, to increase the power and the dimension of the system.
This was good until the old Marklin-motorola system, because there was no feedback. Now with mfx there is a RDS style modulation from the engine decoders back to the 60113 (or central station).

I found a schematics, along with instructions, that explain how to use the old boosters 6017 with the mfx system.
here is the link:

http://www.persmodelrailroad.net/mfx_boost.html

with this schematics, and having clear the idea of what we want, it would not be difficult to develop "our own" booster, that can just connect the master part of the track (the one connected directly to the 60113) to other parts of the layout.

I don't own a cs2 and I don't know neither the pinout of the cs2 to booster cable nor the protocol used to make them talk, but it may even be possible to develop a new type of booster that can be used with 60113/MS2/DS systems, or an interface to use the regular 60174 booster with the beforementioned systems.

Also, it would be nice to integrate the old digital controls (6021 and the like): I believe that the interface 60128 is translating 6021 commands into CAN bus commands, and that 60125 is nothing else than a CAN bus bridge. So, in theory, MS2/DS can be connected to many 60125 and to 60113? Anyone know more details about this?

regards

Paolo

Hi Paolo and all,

Happy new year!

Congratulation participating this forum and thank you for information about mfx feedback.

As you know, the mfx feedback signal doesn't mean S88 signal, right? Mfx feedback signal includes its locomotive information and exists.
Your information seems implementation of big layout for mfx system. I agree with you.

I think mfx is not suitable with big layouts. DCC or MM2 is better than mfx for this issue. Of course, wireless system as Bluetooth and WiFi seems the best solution for big layout. The mfx is good solution but doesn't cover all use cases.

By the way, I'm developing some hardware INSTEAD OF 60113 and MS2. Desktop Station software supports these my original hardware. I have a plan to support big layout booster board. I'm waiting for new power device which is Toshiba's TB67H400AHG. This device can output 8A max.

I don't have a solution to control the big layout using several marklin's 60113s. 60113 aims to control small layout. It is hard work to link between them. I think 60113 is not cheap if you bought many them.

Best regards,
Yaasan

First of all congratulations for this big piece of software.Having the possibility to overcome the price of the CS2 is really good.

Anyone know more details about this?

regards

Paolo

No, the S88 bus is a serial shift register with a parallel load input. It is much easier and cheaper to route this information from the decoders to the controller via cable.
I was talking about the engine decoder feedback, providing informations such as engine name, decoder uid, etc...

I personally believe that mfx is a modern an advanced protocol. MM and MM2 were easy and sturdy, but the modern requirements outdate them.
DCC (like MM and MM2) don't have decoder feedback. That was added later by Lenz with the RailCOM protocol. In my opinion, they just realized that DCC was ageing and copied some feature from the new marklin MFX.

If you don't need the feedback, MM2 and DCC are limited only by the number of addressable devices, and are easier to provide in big layout (wide number of available boosters, cheap to DIY).

Interesting, but doesn't support MFX.
The idea behind MFX is quite genial, the engine decoder modulate the absorbed current with RDS code. In the "ugly box" 60113, beside a uC to interface the CAN bus signals with the rail signals, and a power booster, there is a SAA6579T that perform the demodulation task. A guy in germany developed his own ugly box, that seems to allow external boosters out of the box. But I can't understand enough german.
Anyway here is the link of the page

and the pdf with the schematics.

With the help of google translator, I was able to understand something from this german forum. They mention something about boosters, the signal coming from 60113 would just be used to drive the DIY boosters (I think to prevent some disturbance with MFX feedback). And they mention that original boosters just act like a 60113, translating CAN bus to rail signal, and the MS2 is not able to control multiple boxes (ugly box + boosters?)

One is ok, many are expensive. That's why it would be nice to have DIY boosters. If the informations about booster feedback I found last time is good and working, I believe it would not be difficult to make DIY boosters for less than 50$

mfx is fine for large layouts. I cannot understand why you say it is not suitable. I have witnessed a large layout owned by a member of this forum that has more locomotives on it than could be accommodated by the MM protocol.

MM has only 80 loco addresses and 320 accessory addresses (points, signals, etc) available. Points and signals will take a minimum of two accessory addresses each, some will take more (e.g. signals with red/orange/green aspects).

DCC has 9999 (theoretical limit 10239 I believe) loco addresses and (IIRC) 1024 or 2048 accessory addresses, with a single accessory address being used by a point or signal to get two states as there is a separate bit in the message to indicate closed/thrown or red/green.

mfx has 16384 possible loco addresses and can drive all MM accessory addresses as well as all DCC accessory addresses.

Hi kiwiAlan,

I know Mfx protocol supports many number of locomotives and accessories. It is protocol issue.
But I mean physical issue. Mfx decoder feedback signal requires a booster link unit in case of big layouts. DCC or MM2 can separate the track segmentation easily in this case. Because DCC and MM2 doesn't have a decoder feedback basically.

I think almost every cases don't require this booster link. The new complex feature provides us easy to control but it's not perfect for any cases.

Best regards,
Yaasan

Hi Paolo,

Thank you for information about 60113. German guys seem to make their own 60113 like board or customize 60113. Mfx feedback signal seems similar with Lenze's Railcom based on DCC. These feature requires a complex circuit or devices to receive a reply from locomotive's decoders.

If the original track box monitors CAN signal, the trackbox can become the external booster. But it's not easy. Maybe CS2 and booster instead of original track box seem a better solution.

Thanks for comment. I aim very cheap and open solution instead of the current command station. Mfx (and also Lenze's Railcom) needs an external cost for manufacturing my hardware. Consequently my hardware support only basic DCC and MM2. Fortunately, Mfx locomotives can work with MM2 protocol. It is helpful for me.

Best regards,
Yaasan

In my opinion, MFX is the way to go. Yes, it has additional complexity, but offers you much more. Using MM2 is limited by available addresses, while DCC is not compatible with older Marklin engines.

With a single 60113 and DIY boosters that understand the feedback, you already have solved the complexity and the cost issue.

Or, if the 60174 booster just speak on the CAN bus in a similar way to the 60113, maybe the way to go is to understand how the booster speaks on the CAN bus.
Then, using a bit of the schematics I found, recreate a DIY booster that can work with DS... OR, modify the arduino part of DS to talk with 60113 AND the boosters. OR talk just with the boosters (Removing the ugly box and using only boosters... if they understand the feedback part, why not? After all CS2 can do it).

Of course this is just my idea. There are really many options.

Best regards

Paolo

Firstly I would like to congratulate Yaasan for his great project!!

As an electronic hobbyist I was searching a couple of months to find a decent arduino-based train control project to control my Marklin layout .

Actually till now I was using a Marklin mobile Station 1 to control the two locos and a self-made panel using microchip mcu (
) to control my turnouts ,

After seeing your excellent DSMain site with S88 support I decided to use your project for an ALL-in-ONE solution with future semi-automatic layout.

Yaasan -my friend- I have a couple of thoughts - suggestions:

- I am thinking of connecting a diy usb-keyboard emulator using microchip MCU and with a little project emulating keystrokes it will be awesome for my kids to control everything using not only a laptop and a mouse
but some knobs and pots on a custom made panel so the could easily control loco functions , turnouts , building lights .etc!
The possibilities would be endless of there would be a way to assign keystroke shortcuts to most buttons of your - otherwise excellent - Desktop Station Software .

- Also is with your genuine option of playing wave file and executing external programs I am going to build a self-made analog switch controlled by pc and connected through pc sound-card to 3 or 4 speakers hidden under the building statiions for example to make announcement like 'ALL ABOARD!' voice of Pollar Express e.t.c!

Keep up with your excellent project Yaasan!

Thank you for your time,

Alex,

Hi Alex,

Thank you for post. If you would like to order my hardware, send me e-mail. I'm looking forward to receiving your mail. Your self-made panel seems great! Is this panel connected with MS1?

Desktop Station supports a keyboard. Consequently, your diy keyboard emulator can work with Desktop Station. Keyboard mapping describes in my web site.

I did similar things like you. Because I have Japanese style toy train controller, I try to control my roco's AC loc with this controller via Desktop station.

http://yaasan.mints.ne.jp/wiki/doku.php/usbmascon

Desktop Station can run external executable software. You can assign the external software to each loco's function button on the Desktop Station.
Also MP3 player is included. I also distribute Germany and Japanese train sounds file for free of charge in my web site. Please check and hear that.

I examined all your info and I would like to figure out if there is a way of controlling for example the turnouts with a keys shortcut?

Hello Yassan,

Miss 15 and I have been following this with much interest. We are keen, but only intermediate level, Arduino "Makers".

One suggestion for that page link in the last post related to this text.

Period | Free locomotive break | Break the locomotive.
Comma | Apply locomotive break | Free the locomotive.

When you break a locomotive you damage it in some way, but when you brake a locomotive it just slows it down. Both words sound the same, but have every different meaning - even in the USA, the land of color instead of colour!

Keep up the great work.

Hi! Yaasan

I 've carefully read your updated shortcut page but i didn't find a shortcut for operating turnouts for example!

question: can I assign turnout control to F-keys ? (I can only see image function with edit function option, but where do you declare which turnout to operate?)

Do I miss something Blink ?

I repeat - YOU HAVE DONE AN EXCELLENT job my friend not only with the hardware but with Desktop Station software too!!

As I stated before the option of key-shortcuts opens new possibilities in case - kids for example- you want to control some parts of the layout with key/knobs panel without the need to focus on a screen monitor all the time!

Hi Alex,

Oh sorry, I misunderstood your question.

Current version doesn't support to control turnouts by keyboard. But I have already implemented the function. I will release the new version 0.92f soon. You can change the turnout direction using Ctrl+F-keys.

Best regards,
Yaasan

Great news! my friend..

Today I played with events settings and scripts.

When script is running and you go in plan (layout) view the screen does not refresh automatically and you have to click anywhere in order to see the updating script running in real time!

May be you have to automatically issue some refresh for real-time update -that would be cool ,too !

EXCELLENT my friend! Thank you SO much for your quick action uploading a new updated version.

I 've already downloaded 0.92f and I am really very satisfied with the option to access turnouts through keyboard shortcuts. Now I am going to use a pic emulating a keyboard connected to some knobs and shuttle control for my kids to have a real fun !!

I will let you know as soon as I find some time to start this new diy project....

KEEP UP the good work my friend!

UPDATED: a question to Yaasan: Ι played today with the option 'emulation' in the connection type. What exactly is this? It is supposed to run DS without the need of special hardware connected...is this right?
Does this mean that I can open a browser locally in the same pc and connect to DS through HTTP?

Hi Alex,

You are right. Emulation mode doesn't require any other hardware, e.g. DCC/MM2 Shield and DSmain, Railuino hardware etc. I often use this mode for testing. Currently, Galileo Gen2 supports HTTP mode. Please check my web site like the below.

http://desktopstation.net/gateway/GalileoGen2.html

I recommend you to use serial mode now. Almost hardware can work with serial mode.

Best regards,
Yaasan

Hi
This project looks great.
I bought a Arduino, WiFi Shield and CAN-Bus shield.
My plan is to extend the code to allow controlling through an Android app over WiFi.
I did some test's connecting Wifi and so on, working fine.
I just can't get the Serial_RS4 to build - even the one downloaded from your website before changing anything.
I get this error: Serial_RS4:30: error 'TrackController' does not name a type.
Then a lot of other errors after this, but I guess they are because of the first fault.
From what i found through google, this fault is because some included file is not in the correct location on my disc.
Do you have any good suggestions?
I have the railuino library set up, seems to be correct, it added some new examples to the Arduino app.

Hi,

You can find Serial_RS4 sketch at my web page.
http://desktopstation.net/download.html

Direct link is the following.
http://desktopstation.net/bin/Serial_RS4.ZIP

This archive file includes TrackController library.

Best regards,
Yaasan

Hi MHauge,

Do you open the sketch file with File menu? Please do not open using drag & drop.
Also when you compile the sketch, maybe first time you will see same message. Again click compile or upload button. You can compile the sketch.

Best regards,
Yaasan

Hi, thanks for trying.
I open the file sketch with "File, Open", but still get this fault.
In my Documents folder i have a folder called Arduino.
This has libraries and Serial_RS4 subfolders.
I have tried putting the files from Serial_RS4 in libraries, in a subfolder called Serial_RS4, in the Serial_RS4 folder next to libraries.
No matter where I put them, same fault.

Hi MHauge,

I recommend you to install Railuino library to Arduino IDE's internal libraries folder.
See http://desktopstation.net/railuino.html#SOFTWARE

I tried the automatic install but failed. I don't know why the error occurs.

Best regards,
Yaasan

Hello Yaasan, just a little note.

I tried installing DesktopStation under Linux, and it doesn't work.

With WINE, it gives a lot of debug messages but doesn't start, appaerently the problem is in the System.Windows.Form class.
I tried compiling it with mono, and it fails. Several errors about Microsoft.common.targets.
I do suspect they (errors on wine and mono) are both related, depending on some Windows only specific feature.

it will be nice to have DS working with Linux, since many users now exists on the Linux platform.

I may try to write a little Linux interface for your CAN - Railduino - USB interface, but surely that won't be anything at the level of desktop station, and anyway, it will take time, since I need to read and understand your sources of the Arduino module and figure out the serial language used on the usb link.

I'll keep you updated

best regards

Paolo
