I’m about to install a 60966 mSD decoder in my 37655 diesel loco but I’m seriously concerned about the size of the wires comprising the harness.

The wires are multistrand 19 x 0.03mm which gives a x-sectional area of 0.013mm^2 which implies a current carrying capacity of only 0.13A (130mA). The ‘standard’ Marklin loco wiring is multistrand 10 x 0.1mm with a x-sectional area of 0.07mm^2 and current carrying capacity of 0.7A (700mA).

Interestingly, photos of the 60966 on the Marklin website show what appears to be the heavier wires forming the harness.

Has anyone experience of this? I’m a bit reluctant to proceed using such fine hook-up wires.

I have done many conversions using these decoders, including old brass 2 rail and the wiring specification has never caused any problem. I must admit my first time I too was worried they were too fine.

Thanks Kimball,

I've gone ahead and installed the 60966 and all is well. Just had to change the f1 cab lighting icon on the CS to rear coupler icon.

I note you're a local.

Cheers,
nunk
