But that is because rather to buy lots of individuals coaches and waggons i prefer to buy specific sets with the whole train. later, if i think it can grow more, i buy some specific cars.

I have a few wagon sets, one coach set, and a few train sets, and also a couple of complete starter sets, if they count.

I'll try to list them here but I have to look for their boxes first.

Some...

I won´t go with references, because... I can´t be bothered ;-)

Complete consists;

1) My current favorite is 2 sets of 4 green epoc III german passenger cars; I´ve then left one of the luggage cars out, and added a dark red DSG dining car. Its a very lovely (and long!) consist behind a BR03.

2) Classic Rheingold metal set (5 waggons) behind a BR18.3

3) Epoc III Rheingold set (4 waggons) from Rivarossi. -Stregthened with 2 additional waggons. (oficial add-ons to the set!). These are all 303mm long ones. Looks great behind the Märklin E19!

4) The old Flughafen Zug made of 3 Silberlinge, headed by a BR111 with single-legged pantos. (Einholstromabnemer¿?)

5) Classic ICE protoype train. (Analog one with motorized units in both ends.) Strengthened with an additional middle-waggon.

I´ve also got a couple of freight sets. -But they only consists of 2-3 waggons each, so I use them in other consists...
F.ex; Maersk container cars.
Herningvaerket coal cars.
Swiss tanker cars; exlusive set made for a tanker cars company anniversarry a couple of decades ago... Cant remember the name, but the company colours seems to be white and blue and silver.

Hi Alan,

You will like that 29855 set. It is a nice one. I have basically everything from that set except some of the freight cars. I like those passenger coaches very much and bought the extension set 42758 + two extra cars (DSG and blue one) to have a long train!

I have actually two 29855 BR 18.4 and soon another E40 too. I like both of these locos very much. They are both very high quality and well worth the money spent. That E40 is an awesome puller. I have pulled over 100 freight cars with it! ThumpUp I will use only the frame and electronics of the second 29855 E40 and put my 3039 E110 locos body to it. Then I have a good running older looking E110 as my 3740 looks too new era to my taste.

These sets will surely cheer you up Alan! RollEyes

Cheers,

Janne

Hi again,

You have many sets! I also think that it is better to buy car or train sets and then some extension sets or individual cars/coaches to extend the train. I have bought many Märklin starter sets (maybe around 10-15) and got this way cheap good locomotives and rolling stock. I have also bought many locomotives or cars from starter sets separately as many dealers or sellers "breaks out" the sets. Very cheap and cost effective way to get good stuff.

Regards,

Janne

Hi,

I also like green color in trains and prefer darker red dining cars and not too bright colored trains anyway. That BR 03 pulling passenger coaches must look awesome. I like long trains too as they look more realistic. But older trains can be quite short and look beautiful with, say 3-4 cars only.

You have many really nice trains. Enjoy! ThumpUp

If you think that you really have completed your inventory tomorrow you must also be awake now. Your list must be looooooooooooooooooong...... Hi Ian,

You have even more sets than I thought ThumpUp . You have much room to show them all in your display cabinets. Maybe today I will start to plan how I will fill my display cases... But as I am still waiting for some car sets it will not be the permanent solution.

Only one set, 43505, with 5 Dutch ICL coaches.
The shop told me that only 200 sets were made (only for the Dutch market) but not sure if this is true (500 or 1000 sounds more realistic to me).

Sets, sets...interesting topic. I agree it's a good way to bulk up stock, or sometimes the only way to get what you what (in terms of modern production US tin-plate cars)

I like the way Ian did it, so I will copy him :)

1 loco only set (if 3062+4062 counts, I have them packaged together in the white box)
2 full starter sets (locos, stock, track, etc)
4 Locos from starter sets (I agree with Janne, good value), does not include locos from full starter sets
1 Loco + freight cars set
1 Passanger car set (4228 Rheingold!)
8 Freight car sets of various sizes (some as few as two cars, one as many as 10)

I mentioned this in another topic...I like the new individually packaged sets. Typically the packaging is smaller. I love those big flat styrofoam tray sets...but when it comes to storage the new ones are a lot easier.

I have my eye out for one more set this year...

And I copy both, Ian and Brandon.Smile

Flat styrofoam trays:
1 x 42992 Wagenset "Westerland"
1 x 47904 Wagenset "Kolonialwaren"
1 x 47889 Wagenset "Italienische Klassik"

I re-started my hobby with these 11 years ago.

Recently:
2 x 47785 tin plate box car set "NYC / Southern"
1 x 4579 tin plate box car set "Texas & Pacific"

Plus the odd piece of rolling stock from various "cannibalized" sets.

Hello again,

Yesterday I put two Märklin 4261 sets = 4 coaches all together behind my 37060 and it looks great that way. Maybe these 4-axle DRG (Bayerische) coaches are a bit too long and heavy for a small EP 3/6 K.Bay.Sts.B. but I don´t care. The colours match nicely. This 37060 prototype is older than these coaches prototypes in this version, but there can´t be so much time difference really... When did that yellow DRG-emblem come in use?

Cheers,

Janne

Janne,

S 3/6 and later 18.4 were very efficient and powerful locomotives, I don't think it's too much of a stretch. 18.4 was one of the locos that pulled the big Rheingold coaches in rather long consists.

Brandon, Janne was referring to the EP 3/6, an E lok for passenger trains. Janne I have also tried with that coaches but they look too big for my taste. The Trix ones have same colors, but they are shorter, just like any 3 axles coach.

I´m waiting for these passenger car sets: Märklin 41929 "Rheingold", 42754 international luxury train set, 42758 DB express coaches, 42765 (5 express coaches Epoch I) , 43109 DRG (maybe?) and 43137 DRG.

Janne

Too many to list. Dozens of freight and passenger sets and a lot of duplicates for longer consists. I also like sets where engines are included sans controllers. I have about 70+ of these, and if there is a related add-on set, I have that as well. This does not count "Triebwagen" sets or add on cars.

I agree that starter sets are a bargain, and back in 1998 I obtained my original 6021 control unit that way. Combined with two digital Loks, and some very nice wagons and track it was almost free!

I have another starter set with a MS1 bought for the same reason. I already had CS1 and wanted a "free" controller. The track and rolling stock value made getting the controller very cheap.

Unfortunately I didn't have the patience to wait for the sets that came out with the CS2! Maybe next generation!

Janne, you have good taste in sets. I'm waiting for the new Rheingold set as well!BigGrin

I tend to buy everything second hand.

8900 Freight starter set
8901 Express starter set
8101 Push-Pull Train
8103 Track Work Train
8163 Freight Train Starter Set
8185 Swiss Freight Starter Set
81861 Freight Train Starter Set

The two newer sets were bought mainly for their track and controllers.

I have also been trying to collect everything from the first catalogue.

Hi,

Thanks for correcting Brandon about EP 3/6 vs. S 3/6. I also think automaticly steam locomotives when I see that 3/6 Smile . Do you think a real prototype EP 3/6 could pull four of these 4-axle coaches? It was not very strong locomotive, but at least it was electric locomotive so maybe it would have been possible? Other thing is it's slow speed so it could not have been pulled express trains. I don't even know if these coaches could have been used in other trains too?

I agree though, that it would look better with 3-axle ones.

Regards,

Janne

Hi,

You have an enormous Collection of Märklin sets really ThumpUp !! Thanks for your kind words about my taste in sets. I think that the new Rheingold 41929 set is worth to wait really. Only problem when I have to wait for it is that I can not put my trains into display cases to their final positions as this set + one of my S 3/6 locomotive pulling it will take around 192 cm space in display case + some clearances front and back of this train = around 200 cm total. I want to get my older era trains mostly in one display case so some temporarily arrangements have to be done until this 41929 set arrives. Well, what a big problem really Wink ...

Cheers,

Janne

I don't have followed the price structure with Märklin sets but this is another way of buying Märklin products cheaper in the long run, instead of buying a singkle item at the time.

I used to have all of the trains sets Märklin produced in the 1908's and onwards but than stopped buying them, all I have left is the Airport Express (old paint scheme 111. 103), the 3001 set with carriages, 3371 and the EP 5 (BR E 152) Bavarian set with 3 coaches and the extension set with another 2 coaches.

Whoa, this thread makes my collection look real small. But its an inspiration to increase collection for sure. As of now this is where I stand (quite an expensive hobby for a guy from subcontinent to gather Maerklin:))

-29200 (Ice battery starter set: My first buy)
-29163 (first delta)
-57121 Piko ( intend to use the wagons on Maerklin)
-29310: Forestry set (second delta. arrived from Berlin last weekend:))
-24904 C4 extension extension pack
-24905 C5 extension pack
-36700 Diesel Engine
- Freight cars: Total 7 (4430, 4471 and 4423 wagons)
-Few 188 and 172 tracks

Too right John,

When Uncle Thorsten arranged to get me the 29640 "mega" set with the 60215 CS2 (delivered from Germany) it cost me less at the time than I could buy a 60213 CS2 with a old 60052 AC 60w power supply locally in Australia.

Best part was I got 2 loks I wanted (with sound) and a selection of wagons/coaches and track. I would have been a FOOL not to get it.

Sometimes the "sets" are the best way to go to get what you want.

This is very true. I got my first Delta controller and my 6633 analogue controller by buying starter sets.

Some dealers also split starter sets and will offer the controllers, locos, wagons, etc seperately at prices much lower than the items packaged individually. In this way I have bought several locos and my current MS2 controller.

The "display sets" are also a very economical source of wagons and coaches. If you can find a dealer who will sell them individually online they can be cheaper even than buying the same items second hand.

Hi Janne and Alan,
I concur, the E40 from that set is one of my favorite locos.
I bought it for a reasonable price on eBay, but it developed running problems soon after, so I sent it to Marklin, and it came back as good as new.
As you say, an awesome puller.
